NRL News Footy Tips Round 12

May 31st 2007 08:59
Well, Dane had a fairly good round last week with an average four out of eight last round, but I dipped out badly with a shocking 2 from eight correct tips!

Last weeks difficult round saw my score move up to 50 correct tips out of 88 for the season - Middle of the road I guess!

As is the case every round in 2007, in Round 12 of the NRL is a difficult one to tip.

After correctly predicting the Broncos to beat the Knights in a Round 11 upset, this week I am plumping for the Eels to again record an upset, beating the high flying Tigers at Telstra Stadium this Monday.

If you don't like the look of my tips, than please check out the tips of fellow NRL News writer Dane - he says he is a shocking tipster, but all I have seen lately is consistency!

Cheers,

StephenP

Fines for seven NRL clubs

May 31st 2007 05:50
MEDIA RELEASE - National Rugby League

The National Rugby League Board has fined seven NRL clubs today for salary cap breaches totaliing $464,849 in fines as a result of the final audit for the 2006 season.

Investigations completed by NRL Salary Cap Auditor, Ian Schubert, showed that after completing a full review of all 16 salary cap audits and club submissions, that only seven clubs were found to have slightly broken the salary cap rules.

The seven clubs and penalties were -

Brisbane Broncos - $30,000

St George-Illawarra Dragons -$74,975

Newcastle Knights - $19,260

South Sydney Rabbitohs - $54,145

Canberra Raiders - $173,203

Melbourne Storm - $63,266

Wests Tigers - $50,000

While investigations showed that no club was caught blatantly cheating the cap, the fines were handed down for failure to properly notify the NRL of third party agreements, the treatment of payments to players departing clubs, overspending in the 'Top 25' cap and in the second tier, the treatment of payments to managers and the provision of statutory declarations

"While these are not deliberate, systematic attempts to cheat, the fines are an expensive lesson in the need for administrative diligence," NRL Chief Executive, David Gallop, said today.

"The Board has sent another clear message about the game's commitment to enforcing the Salary Cap," Mr Gallop said.

"Compliance can be challenging at times but everyone is subject to the same rules and every club benefits from the success the competition has enjoyed through the Salary Cap in recent years.

"We are in a period of financial stability for clubs, of increasing rewards for players and week in week out excitement for fans of all teams.

"The proper maintenance of the Salary Cap is an important part of ensuring that we continue to grow that success.

"The encouraging thing is that clubs are generally trying to do the right thing.

"The fines certainly show that some should work harder in understanding all their obligations but there is nothing that we can see in these audits which would suggest the sort of systematic abuse which would require the loss of competition points.

Clubs will have five business days in which to make any extra submissions to the NRL in relation to the fine amounts.

Eels compound Warriors woes

May 28th 2007 11:14
The Parramatta Eels notched another convincing home victory on Monday night, registering a comprehensive 28-6 victory over a disappointing New Zealand Warriors team at a chilly Parramatta Stadium.

The Eels five tries to one victory was overshadowed by a horror night to mammoth Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei, with the former Kiwi flanker’s handling gifting the home side three tries

A Robbie Farah field goal just thirty seconds before the half time siren proved the difference at CUA Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with the Wests Tigers holding off a determined Penrith Panthers fight back to run out 25-24 winners.

In what was an entertaining, and at times brutal clash, three Tigers tries in a twenty minute before and after halftime enabled Wests to stretch their winning sequence to six matches, whilst leaving the Panthers languishing in the bottom four

Titans victory marred by send off

May 26th 2007 12:09
A majestic two try performance from Jetstar Gold Coast Titans skipper Scott Prince paved the way for his side’s 25-18 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Carrara Stadium on Saturday night.

While the match was marred by a controversial 77th minute send off of Souths prop Jaiman Lowe, it was a welcome return to form for the Gold Coast side, after noticeably struggling over the past three weeks

Rampant Raiders rout Dragons

May 25th 2007 13:06
The Canberra Raiders have a put a week of off field drama behind them by registering a 30-6 thrashing of a mistake riddled St George-Illawarra Dragons outfit at a chilly Canberra Stadium on Friday night.

With the thermometer recording an icy 6 degrees, the rampant Raiders ran riot with a five tries to one shut out of a disjointed Dragons outfit, with rangy Canberra centre Adrian Purtell crossing for a rare hat trick

NRL News Footy Tips Round 11

May 25th 2007 00:09
Well, both Dane and myself redeemed ourselves last week, with both of us recording 5 out of 6 correct tips for the round - if only the New Zealand Warriors wingers could hold the ball, then it would have been a perfect round for these two tipsters!

Last weeks easier round saw my score move up to 48 correct tips out of 80 for the season - Middle of the road I guess

The Queensland Maroons pulled off yet another customary come from behind victory over the New South Wales Blues on Wednesday night, scoring 19 unanswered second half points to win the first game of the 2007 Harvey Norman State of Origin series 25-18 at a packed Suncorp Stadium.

In front of a parochial crowd of 52,498 vocal Maroons supporters, the Queenslanders stormed back from an 18-6 half time deficit, to once again break the heart of a spirited New South Wales effort

Round 10 produced some thrilling action and a host of first-rate individual performances despite several clubs being severely affected by State of Origin omissions.

In a shortened round, which saw six games instead of the usual eight, the stand-outs included Wests Tigers' ball-playing prop Todd Payten, Cronulla's star back-rower Paul Gallen and Parramatta point-scoring machine Luke Burt

Eagles Down Gallant Broncos

May 21st 2007 12:00
Manly have consolidated their place at the top of the NRL ladder after a hard-fought 18-6 victroy over an inexperienced Brisbane side at Brookvale Oval tonight. In their ninth win of the season, the Sea Eagles were tested by the young Broncos for the majority of the game but ultimately had too much class for a team missing seven players through State of Origin duty.

Halfback Matt Orford had his finest game since returning from injury a month ago while man of the match Anthony Watmough and fellow back-rower Glenn Stewart also put in strong performances for the eagles. Despite allowing Manly 22 offloads and missing 43 tackles throughout the match, Brisbane gave coach Wayne Bennett plenty to be proud of with their effort and determination over 80 minutes
