Cowboys hold off determined Bulldogs

August 31st 2007 11:50
The North Queensland Cowboys withstood an explosive second half fight back by the Canterbury Bulldogs to register a 38-32 victory at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Friday night.

The Cowboys held a commanding 38-10 lead inside the closing twenty minutes, but it was four tries in 14 minutes to the Bulldogs that almost saw them snatch a remarkable victory.

North Queensland were always going to finish in third position regardless of the result, with the Bulldogs awaiting the rest of this weekends results to discover their final position inside the top eight.

After a fiery opening five minutes, it was Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston that opened the scoring with a sixth minute penalty goal for a Bulldogs ruck infringement.

The vision of Thurston extended the home sides lead in the 16th minute, with the crafty half charging down a short blindside and looping a three man cut out pass to winger Ty Williams to score.

Thurston’s sideline conversion pushed the home side out to an early 8-0 lead.

Williams was over for his second try just three minutes later, with quick hands putting the flashy winger over in the corner.

Canterbury finally got back into the match through some handy field position, and the visitors scored of their first foray through a barnstorming try to skipper Andrew Ryan.

Hazem El Masri easily converted to make it 14-6 after 26 minutes.

Successive penalties put the Bulldogs back on the attack, with a scintillating backline movement allowing centre Daryl Millard to cross unmarked.

El Masri failed to convert, leaving the score at 14-10 after 31 minutes.

A devastating Ray Cashmere charge just before the half time break extended the home sides lead, with elusive centre Ben Farrar making up for an earlier indiscretion by dotting down in the 39th minute.

Thurston’s fourth conversion of the night handed the Cowboys a 20-10 half-time lead.

A Justin Smith try in the 51st minute pushed the home side out to a 26-10 lead, with the Cowboys going even further ahead when they recorded back to back tries from the resulting kick off.

It was a breathtaking example of the up-tempo style of football the Cowboys have become renowned for, with North Queensland centre Ashley Graham bursting through some tiring Bulldogs defence and racing fifty metres before linking with Thurston to score in the corner.

Thurston’s seventh conversion of the night gave the Cowboys a commanding 38-10 lead.

The mood of the game changed however when Cowboys coach Graham Murray chose to rest chief playmaker Thurston, with the Bulldogs able to cross for converted tries to Willie Tonga, Luke Patten and Sonny Bill Williams to claw the scoreline back to 38-28 with 14 minutes remaining.

The scene was set for a grandstand finish when Patten crossed for his second of the night, but the home side held firm despite an avalanche of Bulldogs attack to secure a thrilling six point victory.

NRL News Update

August 31st 2007 02:03
The producer of NRL News would like to apologise for the limited coverage and news updates over the past fortnight - I took a weeks holiday and came back to find that my computer had a fried motherboard, meaning I was without a computer for another week - so apologies for that.

I would also like to take this opportunity to state that this domain will not be continuing after the September 30 grand final, as I have decided to take another job offer. It has been extremely entertaining running this domain over the past year and a bit, and I thank everyone for the comments and encouragement that they have submitted throughout that time.

On a lighter note, we are currently in the final week of the 2007 NRL News Footy Tipping competition, and anyone of ten tipsters could take out this years crown. 'Big Russki' has been leading the competition since Round 6, but as the table below shows, the race for the title is still wide open. Good luck to everyone with this weeks tips!!

VENUE and TIME: Dairy Farmers Stadium, Friday 7.30pm

HEAD TO HEAD: Played 21, Cowboys 6, Bulldogs 15

COVERAGE: Channel 9 (live), Fox Sports (delay), ABC Radio, 2GB

LAST CLASH: Cowboys 26 – Bulldogs 16, Suncorp Stadium, 2007

MEDICAL ROOM:
North Queensland will be without the services of representative forwards Luke O’Donnell (hamstring), Shane Tronc (knee), Steve Southern (ankle) and Sione Faumuina (suspension) for the remainder of the season.

Bulldogs enforcer Willie Mason makes his return from a wrist injury for this clash, replacing injured team mate Mark O’Meley (quad strain) in the starting line-up. International winger Matt Utai also makes a welcome return from a hamstring injury on the flanks, while Kane Cleal (jaw) and Aaron Wheatley (shoulder) will not return again this year.

FORM:
The Cowboys head into the clash on the back of four consecutive victories, although all four wins were against the lowly Raiders, Panthers, Dragon and Knights. Possessing the worst points differential (-77)of all teams in the top eight, coach Graham Murray will utilise this weeks physical clash with Canterbury as an important gauge of how his team is faring ahead of next weeks final series.

While having only won two of their past four matches, Canterbury coach Steve Folkes will have appreciated the chance to compete against fellow top eight combatants. The Bulldogs were well and truly in the contest against the Storm for the opening 60 minutes last Friday night, before four late tries to Melbourne blew the ‘Dogs off the park. Canterbury needs to win and hope results go their way to have a chance of securing a top four position.

KEY MATCH-UPS:
Matt Bowen vs Luke Patten

Easily the competitions from fullback, Bowen currently leads the NRL’s leading try scorers and line breaks lists, with the spritely number one in devastating best form. Possessing blinding acceleration and quicksilver footwork, Bowen’s attacking combination with Thurston will need to be on-song if the Cowboys are going to secure the two points against a desperate Bulldogs outfit.

One of the safest fullbacks in the game, Patten has established himself as a vital member of the Bulldogs defensive unit. Patten’s positional play is always perfect, providing his team with advantageous field position in which to start their sets of six. Look for Patten to combine with Sherwin when inside the Cowboys red zone, with the Bulldogs custodian set to capitalise on Sherwin’s crafty cross field grubbers and chip kicks.

Ashley Graham vs Daryl Millard
Currently in career best form, Graham has finally proven what an outstanding talent he is by crossing for 17 tries in only 18 appearances for the Cowboys this season. The deceptively quick centre sits equal third on the NRL table for most line breaks this season, with the former Eel striking up an electric combination with Thurston on the fringes.

Having competed in 22 matches in his debut season, Millard has formed a lethal combination with Sonny Bill Williams on the left hand fringes for the Bulldogs this season. The former Dragon centre has crossed for 11 tries in his first full year of first grade, and his clash with the lightening Cowboys backline is sure to be a highlight.

VERDICT:
Canterbury will go along a way to recording a crucial victory if they can nullify the Cowboys attacking dynamos, Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen. The Bulldogs forward pack looks a lot more menacing then the under strength Cowboys pack, so look to the Bulldogs to extract revenge for last weeks hammering at the hands of the Storm.

NRL News Round 22 Footy Tips

August 9th 2007 11:32
Well, with the Warriors and the Roosters fighting out a thrilling 31-all draw last Sunday, I don't think anyone in the universe would have received a perfect round in last week's NRL tipping!

Depending on which tipping competition rulings you follow, I finished with either a 6 or a 7 out of a possible 8 (we will go with 7 correct ) - bringing my seasons tally to 102 out of 160 correct tips - mediocre to say the least! The Dragons and Cowboys pulled off a great come from behind victories to boost their semi-final aspirations, whilst the Roosters kept the slimmest of slim finals chances alive by sharing the points with the Warriors
