Titans reel in Sharks

March 29th 2008 12:39
The Gold Coast Titans have kept their imposing home record intact, grinding out a gutsy 18-4 victory over a scrappy Cronulla Sharks outfit at Skilled Park tonight.

In what was a dour spectacle featuring brutal, rugged defence, the Titans fought back from a 0-4 half-time deficit to score 18 unanswered second half points to cement themselves a top eight position.

Gold Coast co-captains Luke Bailey and Scott Prince led the way for the home side, with the star duo sparking their team-mates into action much to the adoration of the vocal 19,050 strong Robina crowd.

The Titans dominated both possession and field position from the opening kick-off, and were unlucky not to post first points through rookie winger Ben Jeffery.

Video referee Graeme West was called onto adjudicate on the potential four-pointer, only for Jeffery to be denied thanks to centre partner Luke O’Dwyer being marginally offside from the Scott Prince bomb.

But after being under the pump for the opening twenty minutes, the Cronulla playmakers clicked into gear with their first foray inside the Titans red zone, with Brett Kimmorley and Blake Green perfectly executing a set move for Sharks speedster David Simmons to cross wide out.

Luke Covell’s sideline conversion cannoned into the left hand upright, leaving the Sharks holding a 4-0 lead after 24 minutes.

With points hard to come by, Covell again failed with a 39th minute penalty shot, sending the Sharks to the sheds with a 4-0 half-time advantage.

The Titans hit back early in the second half thanks to the sublime skills of Mat Rogers, with the dynamic five-eighth grubbering and regathering to finally get the home side on the board after a glut of possession.

However, in what was turning into a poor night for goal kickers, Jeffery’s conversion attempt also cannoned into the upright, leaving the game all tied up after 46 minutes.

Rogers try sparked the home side into action, this time backrower Brad Meyers barrelling over for a four-pointer from close range off the back of a weaving Prince charge, with Prince’s conversion allowing the Titans some breathing space at 10-4 after 56 minutes.

A 68th minute Prince penalty goal pushed the Gold Coast’s lead out to eight, before Titans winger Jordan Atkins wrapped up the two competition points with his fifth try of the season in the 75th minute.

The Titans will again entertain their adoring home fans next Saturday when they play host to the Canberra Raiders, whilst the Sharks continue their road trip thanks to their home ground renovations, this time meeting the St George-Illawarra Dragons next Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

Sydney Roosters 10 defeated Melbourne Storm 6

The Sydney Rosters have recorded a dour 10-6 victory over the Melbourne Storm in a fiery encounter at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight.
It was a lacklustre performance from the defending premiers, with the Storm’s poor showing consigning them to back-to-back losses for the first time in two seasons.
The Roosters dominated for the majority of the match, leading from start to finish cementing a top four position.

Canberra Raiders 21 defeated St George-Illawarra Dragons 14

The Canberra Raiders have come from a 0-14 deficit to beat the St George-Illawarra Dragons 2-14 at a chilly Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium tonight.
Two second half tries to Raiders centre Joel Monaghan put the home side in front for the first time, before a late Todd Carney field goal sealed the victory.
St George-Illawarra can feel a tad unlucky with some crucial decisions going against them, with the Raiders now firmly entrenched in the top eight.

Stay tuned for a full report of the Gold Coast v Cronulla match from Skilled Park.

Undermanned Broncos gun down Cowboys

March 28th 2008 12:34
The Brisbane Broncos proved that they can dominate without their big guns, dishing out a 36-2 hiding to a demoralised North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

The six tries to nil victory was even more impressive considering that Brisbane skipper Darren Lockyer and fullback Karmichael Hunt withdrew just hours before kick-off, with new Broncos recruit Peter Wallace producing another stellar performance
