'Grapple tackle' bites the dust
December 28th 2007 08:30
The 2008 National Rugby League (NRL) Premiership season will feature a host of experimental rule amendments and changes to referee interpretations including the scrapping of the grapple tackle from the game.
The new rule stipulates that any prolonged contact with the head or neck i.e. tackles known as 'The Crusher' where a player uses his body weight to bend and exert pressure on another players head/neck, will be penalised and more serious cases will involve a visit to the judiciary.
The number of interchanges will be reduced from 12 to 10 and ball stripping permitted if the ball carrier is in the act of trying to ground the ball for a try are the two experimental rule amendments approved by the NRL.
Other changes include quick 20 metre restarts once officials are in position regardless of whether defence is ready or not, refs can consult the video ref to check on dubious ball stripping and goal-line restarts will have a standard time where the referee can warn teams once and then give a penalty kick 10 metres out if the warning is ignored.
