Bulldogs Defeat Raiders In Trial

February 28th 2009 20:14
The Bulldogs held off a spirited comeback from Canberra to win their NRL trial 24-16 at suburban Logan on Saturday night.

Down 18-0 towards the end of the first half, the Raiders stormed back to score three unanswered tries and get to within two points of the Bulldogs with ten minutes to go.

But Canterbury scored their fourth try of the match to put the game beyond the Raiders' reach.

The Bulldogs, last year's wooden spooners, deserved the win as they dominated possession throughout and defended fiercely in the second half.

They started more committed than their opponents and always looked more dangerous in attack.

Canberra got away to the worst possible start when they lost Scott Logan to an ankle injury, the big prop limping off after a heavy tackle in the first minute.

It went from bad to worse when Bulldogs winger Bryson Goodwin crossed out wide and Mick Ennis converted to put the Sydney side ahead 6-0 after just five minutes.

The Bulldogs had all the ball over the opening 25 minutes and put the Raiders under huge pressure with their relentless attack.

New signing Brett Kimmorley went close, only to be denied by some desperate defence, but the pressure eventually told when fullback Luke Patten burst through some flimsy tackles to score, Ennis again converting to put the Bulldogs out to a 12-0 lead.

They were in again seven minutes before the break when Ennis finished off some brilliant lead-up work from Goodwin, Patten and promising newcomer Jamal Idris, who used his lightning speed to set the Bulldogs off on a 90 metre break down the right touchline.

The Raiders were looking certain to go in to the break staring at an 18-0 deficit, but they struck back right on the stroke of halftime against the run of play.

In one of the rare forays into the Bulldogs quarter, Josh McCrone stabbed a kick ahead, which Bulldogs winger Brent Crisp spilled over the line for Raiders centre Joel Monaghan to fall on the loose ball.

Terry Campese converted to narrow the gap to 18-6 at the break.

Two minutes after the re-start Monaghan scored his second when the Bulldogs again failed to deal with a chip ahead, spilling the ball over the line to hand the Raiders centre the simplest of tries and put his side back to within eight points.

The gap was down to two points when Monaghan's centre partner Adrian Purtell strolled over untouched and Campese converted, but that was as close as the Raiders were to get as the Bulldogs absorbed the pressure then struck back to seal the win.

Broncos Defeat Raiders In Trial

February 21st 2009 22:15
Brisbane will sweat on a medical update on star fullback Karmichael Hunt after he suffered suspected torn stomach muscles during Saturday night's 30-16 NRL trial win over Canberra at a packed Dolphin Oval.

More than 10,000 fans packed the grass terraces for the trial which trumpeted the eagerly-awaited debut of boom teenager Israel Folau.

Folau didn't disappoint the huge crowd, almost scoring in the 42nd minute before showing his strength to carry a couple of Canberra defenders across the line for his maiden try for the club.

Hunt, renowned for his toughness, suffered the injury trying to ground the ball five minutes into the clash.

He did not return and could be in doubt for Brisbane's NRL season opener against North Queensland on March 13.

Halfback Peter Wallace had an outstanding game, his kicks setting up tries for Taylor and flying young winger Jharal Yow Yeh in the 72nd minute which pushed the score out to 30-16.

Brisbane came out of the blocks like Usain Bolt, crossing Canberra's line twice in the opening few minutes only to have tries disallowed to winger Yow Yeh and Hunt disallowed.

Canberra regrouped after Brisbane's early onslaught replying with two tries to lead 12-0 after just 13 minutes.

The first came from a bust inside Canberra's own half by powerhouse Kiwi international Bronson Harrison before he offloaded an inside ball to fullback David Milne to cross.

The Raiders struck again six minutes later this time through prop David Tilse who wrestled his way through a wall of Brisbane players.

Five-eighth Terry Campese converted both tries for a handy 12-0 lead with Brisbane surprisingly struggling with the pace in the humid conditions.

Brisbane finally got over the line through impressive young winger Antonio Winterstein after a routine backline raid in the left corner.

Another of Brisbane's young guns Gerard Beale showed tremendous pace by beating a pack of chasers to a perfectly-weighted Wallace grubber kick in the 25th minute.

Corey Parker converted both tries and the teams took the halftime break locked at 12-all.

The Canberra Raiders opening trial of 2009 proved to be a success both on and off the field on Saturday afternoon, with over $3,500 being raised for the ACT Eden-Monaro Cancer Support Group.

Patrons who attended Saturday’s match at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan gained free entry to the ground, with the only cost being an optional gold coin donation to the Cancer Support Group.

In the end the generosity of both Raiders and Sharks fans shone through on the day, with a total of $3,827.70 being donated to one of the regions hardest working charitable organisations.

Mark Green from the ACT Eden-Monaro Cancer Support group said he was overwhelmed by the response of the fans that attended, and thanked them for their kindness and support.

“There was no obligation to donate any money on Saturday yet people were donating five and ten dollar notes into our buckets at the gate,” Mr Green Said. “It just goes to show what great supporters of charity rugby league fans are, and we thank everyone who donated on the day.”

Mr Green said the money raised goes straight into the hands of families in the region who have been affected by Cancer, to help them with cost of living, and helping out during a difficult time.

The donation also reflected the healthy crowd which attended on Saturday, with Raiders CEO Don Furner praising the people who attended.

“To have such a big crowd for a trial match in January shows what a loyal bunch of supporters the Raiders have and their generous donation to the Cancer Support Group is much appreciated by the club,” Furner said. “Hopefully the fans that came out to watch us on Saturday enjoyed the game and they sign up for a club membership ahead of the season.”

Hinchcliffe and Weyman return

June 10th 2008 04:29
MEDIA RELEASE - Canberra Raiders

Canberra Raiders

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will welcome back Ryan Hinchcliffe and Michael Weyman into their side this weekend, for their must win match against the Brisbane Broncos at Canberra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Hinchcliffe returns after an extended layoff through a thumb injury, while Weyman plays his first match since being suspended in round four.

Raiders prop Scott Logan will miss the next three matches for the Green Machine, after he today pleaded guilty on his dangerous throw charge.

Logan’s absence sees Troy Thompson return to the starting side with Weyman on the bench, while Hinchcliffe’s inclusion on the bench sees a reshuffle of the Raiders playmakers, with Glen Buttriss set to start the match on Sunday at hooker.

With Buttriss starting at hooker Raiders skipper Alan Tongue moves to five-eighth, with Terry Campese shifting to the centres to cover for the injured Adrian Purtell, who is set to miss a minimum of three matches after straining the medial ligament in his knee.

David Milne shifts from the wing to fullback for the match, with incumbent fullback Bronx Goodwin trading places with Milne on the wing.

The Raiders have named an extended bench for the match with Ben Jones and Brett Kelly named in jumpers 18 and 19, while Toyota Cup centre Justin Carney has been named in jumper number 20. If Carney plays on Sunday afternoon it will be his first grade debut.

Raiders assistant Coach David Furner said Campese’s move to the centre would allow Alan Tongue to move into the halves, and maintain the size out wide in the backs.

“With Adrian Purtell out for between 3-6 weeks we’ve moved Terry Campese into the centres, and he’s played there before,” Furner said. “Alan has played in the halves before and he’s also a very good organiser and he’s been in a situation at nine over the past few weeks where he’s been more of an organiser, so we don’t see too much of a change their.”

Furner said David Milne’s move to fullback had been solid against the Eels, and he would stay there for the Broncos match.

“David has been taking his opportunities and it was a late change last week, Neil (Henry) spoke to him about his carries, and he has plenty of speed to the ball and bringing it back to the defensive line,” he said. “Again there’s some things there we need to adjust but he’s been impressive.”

The Canberra Raiders team to meet the Broncos is -

1. David Milne
2. Colin Best
3. Terry Campese
4. Joel Monaghan
5. Bronx Goodwin
6. Alan Tongue (C)

Monaghan on standby for NSW

June 3rd 2008 05:40
MEDIA RELEASE - Canberra Raiders

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have named an extended bench for this weekends clash with the Eels at Parramatta Stadium, after centre Joel Monaghan was called into the NSW squad today for the second state of Origin match in Brisbane.

Monaghan is on standby for the injured Mark Gasnier, and will come into the side if the St George-Illawarra centre is ruled out through injury.

With NSW winger Jarryd Hayne also in doubt through the threat of suspension, Monaghan may also find himself on the wing if Hayne is suspended later this week.

Despite the chance of selection for the Blues, Raiders Coach Neil Henry named Monaghan in the Raiders line-up to face the Eels on Saturday, with Brett Kelly named on the extended bench.

If Monaghan is drafted in the NSW team Kelly will come onto the wing for the Green Machine, with Colin Best moving infield to the centres.

Henry said the Raiders would prepare this week as if Monaghan was already in the Blues team, with Colin Best moving infield.

"There's a chance Joel could still play, but we trained this morning with Colin Best in the centres," Henry said.

"We're preparing as if Joel will not be here, but there is a chance he could play."

Henry said Monaghan's selection was well deserved, for both him as an individual and for the Raiders.

"He's been good for us this year and created some attacking opportunities for us so if he does play it's a great opportunity for him," he said.

"It's a great thing for both him and the club, and reward for a good start to the season."

A small injury to Scott Logan was the only other concern for the Green Machine, but Henry said an extended bench gave the Raiders options for Saturday night.

"Scott Logan has a small hip flexor problem so we'll see if he's Ok, but Troy Thompson's knee has come good and after some swelling he ran quite well this morning," he said.

"Michael Weyman comes into contention this week as well, so it depends on the fitness of Logan."

After serving a six week suspension Michael Weyman was also named on the extended Raiders bench, and said he's looking forward to getting back on the paddock this weekend.

"I'll just have to wait and see what happens by the end of the week," Weyman said.

"I feel alright I suppose but it's been a fair while since I had a run.

Raiders name Costigan

May 6th 2008 05:15
MEDIA RELEASE - Canberra Raiders

Canberra Raiders

The Canberra Raiders will welcome back Queensland enforcer Neville Costigan into the team this weekend, when they take on the Sydney Roosters at Aussie Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Costigan made his return to rugby league last weekend when he played for Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup match, and showed enough in his 60 minutes to prove himself ready to take on one of the toughest packs in the league.

Scott Logan (knee) and Nigel Plum (shoulder) are the two injury concerns for the Green Machine, and will be monitored during the week to make sure they are fully fit for the match.

Raiders Coach Neil Henry said Costigan would add some firepower to the Raiders forward pack, and he expected plenty of work from the returning back rower.

"He had a solid hit out up at Mackay in the Queensland Cup so he comes back in and we move Marshall (Chalk) to the bench at the moment," Henry said.

"He gives a bit more punch out there; he's good in attack and gives us some versatility with Chalk on the bench as he can play out on the edge or outside backs.

"He's trained well and I think our bench has got some good minutes in them anyway, we'll probably run him on at 20 minutes a time and get a solid 40 minutes from him."

The Raider squad to face the Roosters is -

1.Bronx Goodwin
2.Colin Best

Weyman to miss six

April 8th 2008 05:08
MEDIA RELEASE - Canberra Raiders

Canberra RAiders

Canberra Raiders prop Michael Weyman has taken the early guilty plea and will miss the next six weeks of football courtesy two striking charges emanatig from last Saturday nights match against the Gold Coast Titans.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said Weyman's penalty is just, but he has been disappointed by the way the situation has been played out by the Gold Coast.

"I've had a few discussions with the league and the disappointment we've had with their players commenting on the charge and what he should get and that should not happen," Furner said.

"The league knows that, and I spoke to Michael Searle as well and he was apologetic, but it's not their place to come out and talk about how many weeks he should get, and I know Michael (Weyman) is very disappointed that this was going on prior to the charge coming through."

In more bad news for the Raiders, Ryan Hinchcliffe will miss the next 6-8 weeks with a broken thumb, joining Glen Turner, Neville Costigan, Brett Kelly, Phil Graham and William Zillman.

Fullback Zillman has played his last match in Canberra colours, with the zippy fullback announcing yesterday that he has signed on with the Titans for four years as of 2009.

Raiders outlast Titans in NYC

April 5th 2008 08:08
A spectacular 70-metre try to Canberra Raiders centre Justin Carney has snatched a last gasp 28-22 victory over the Gold Coast Titans in the Toyota Under 20 match at Skilled Park on Saturday night.

With the scores locked at 22-all inside the final forty seconds, Carney bumped off three defenders and carried another two over the line to complete an entertaining five tries to four victory.

Both sides struggled with possession in the greasy conditions, with the Raiders willingness to chance their arm in attack securing them the much deserved two competition points.

Canberra stunned the locals with an early try to prop Zac Merritt inside the opening ten minutes, with some poor handling from the home team providing the visitors the early ascendancy.

But a try against the run of the play sparked the home side into action, with powerhouse Titans centre Kingi Aka’oula climbing high to take a Matthew Nuttal bomb, and proceed to steamroll his way through two Canberra defenders to get the Titans on the board.

Cody Nelson’s 19th minute conversion and a further penalty goal in the 33rd minute pushed the Titans out to a handy 8-6 lead, before Canberra half Matt Smith jinked his way through some tiring Titans defence to hand the visitors a slight 10-8 8 half-time advantage.

Canberra extended their lead just five minutes into the second stanza, with flying fullback Josh Dugan burrowing his way over from close range.

Dugan had no problems converting his own try, pushing the Raiders out to a crucial 16-8 lead given the inclement conditions.

But not to be outdone, nippy Titans five-eight Nelson was able to weave his own bit of magic to get the home side back into the contest, with the livewire number six leaving defenders in his wake as he dotted down to make it 16-12 inside the final 30 minutes.

It was Raiders fullback Dugan that brought the Robina crowd alight with an incisive run in the 60th minute, with reserve forward Andrew Edwards capitalising with a simple try off the back of Dugan’s length of the field effort.

Dugan’s third goal of the night pushed the Raiders lead out to 22-12, with the visitor’s penchant for razzle dazzle football starting to create holes in the tiring Titans defence.

But not to be outdone, the home side took full advantage of a Canberra fumble, with destructive Titans centre Esi Tonga scoring to keep the home side alive at 22-18 heading into the final ten minutes.

And teenage Titans sensation Will Matthews ensured a thrilling finish when he slammed the ball down to level the scores with just four minutes remaining, but it was Carney’s explosive effort that snatched the last minute victory for the visiting Canberra side.

The Gold Coast now travel to Parramatta Stadium next Friday night to take on the competition leading Parramatta Eels, whilst the Raiders will play host to the Wests Tigers next Sunday

Furner named new Raiders coach

April 1st 2008 05:14
MEDIA RELEASE - Canberra Raiders

Canberra Raiders

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have announced that current Raiders assistant coach David Furner will be head Coach of the club from 2009, after agreeing to a new three year deal today.

Furner will replace current coach Neil Henry at the end of October, after Henry announced yesterday that he will be departing the club at the end of the 2008 season.

The appointment of Furner as coach in 2009 has been welcomed and well received by everyone in the Raiders organisation, and stems back to a wonderful career as a player and coach with the club.

Furner said his appointment to head coach will be a great honour, and it would be a chance he would accept and look to build on over the next few seasons.

"It was a dream for me to actually play for the Raiders, and I know that having an opportunity to come back and start my coaching career at the Raiders is a dream come true," Furner said.

"I am a local boy and my hearts always been with Canberra."

In his third full season as an assistant Coach Furner said he is ready to take the next step in the coaching ranks, and is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

"I think like anything even with my playing days, you have to prepare yourself as best you can both physically and mentally, and I see this as the same situation," he said.

"Until you're actually in the job there's going to be things tossed up and you need to deal with them at that time."

Meanwhile, Marshall Chalk replaces injured Raiders centre Phil Graham for this weeks clash with the Gold Coast Titans.

Graham joins William Zillman in sitting on the sidelines for the remainder of the 2008 NRL season, with the speedy back this week sucumbing to a serious knee injury.

Canberra Raiders rookie Bronx Goodwin has been named at fullback for this Saturday nights clash with the St George-Illawarra Dragons, replacing regular fullback William Zillman.

Lincoln Withers (ribs) and Michael Weyman have been named on an extended bench after missing last weeks victory over Penrith through injury, with both players required to pass fitness tests later this week.

Weyman replaces giant prop Scott Logan, who will miss the next 6-8 weeks with a cheekbone injury.

Canberra Raiders coach Neil Henry has named a youthful team for this Saturday nights battle with Newcastle at Energy Australia Stadium.

Raiders Coach Neil Henry has named the strongest possible squad for the
match, with only Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (knee), David Milne (Abdominal),
Brett Kelly (knee) and Ben Jones (ankle) unavailable.

It will be the first NRL game for Raiders new recruit Joel Monaghan
since his return to the club, after a three year stint with the Sydney
Roosters.

While possessing plenty of pace in the backs, Henry has gone with plenty of muscle up front as well, naming three big men on an extended bench, with Michael Weyman, Dane Tilse and Josh Miller, while Marshall Chalk has been named in the top 17 thanks to his utility value.

Canberra Raiders

Canberra Raiders

Attack – 7/10
Defence – 7/10
My prediction – 12th

As is the case in recent seasons, most critics are again predicting lean times for the youthful Canberra Raiders in season ’08. With the Raiders playing roster devoid of a high profile ‘star’ to steer them around the paddock, Canberra coach Neil Henry will again be relying on the exuberance of youth to guide the Raiders through the inevitable tough times.

With a backline full of attacking brilliance and blinding speed, the Raiders season will hinge on whether they can rectify their woeful goalline defensive lapses of last season. Always tough to beat on their home soil, coach Henry will also need to rectify his charges poor traveling record for them to seriously challenge for a Top 8 position.

While Henry has a determined and willing team at his disposal, his young Raiders will struggle to continuously keep their intensity at the optimum level in what will be another close season.

Strengths-

A number of the Raiders youngsters will be better for the experience gained last year, so expect Canberra to cause a few upsets against some of their more fancied opposition. Coach Henry has some of the best young talent at his disposal, with William Zillman, Bronx Goodwin, Terry Campese and Todd Carney looking to kick on from successful debut seasons.

The enthusiasm of the younger brigade is sure to inspire the older guys, and Canberra Stadium is yet another advantage – most teams dread the road trip to play in Canberra’s freezing cold conditions.

Weaknesses-

One of Canberra’s strengths is also their greatest weakness – inexperience. Only Alan Tongue, Colin Best, Lincoln Withers, Scott Logan and Colin Best have played 100 top grade career games, with the average age of the Raiders top 17 being only 24 years. If the Raiders are hit with injuries, than coach Henry will be forced to blood youngsters from either the Raiders under 20 Toyota squad, or from the local Canberra competition.

Best Team-

1- William Zillman
2- Colin Best
3- Joel Monaghan
4- Phil Graham
5- Adrian Purtell
6- Todd Carney
7- Michael Dobson
8- Scott Logan
9- Lincoln Withers
10- Troy Thompson
11- Dane Tilse
12- Neville Costigan
13- Alan Tongue

14- Josh Miller
15- Michael Weyman
16- Marshall Clark
17– Tom Learoyd-Lahrs

Trial Matches-

16/02/08 v Gold Coast Titans @ Briggs Rd Sporting Complex, Ipswich
23/02/08 v Brisbane Broncos @ Wade Park, Orange
01/03/08 v North QLD Cowboys @ Brothers RL Park, Mackay

2008 Gains and Losses –

Gains – Joel Monaghan (Sydney Roosters), Matt Smith (QRL)

Losses – Andrew Dunemann and Jason Williams (QRL), Brad Cross (West Belconnen), Matt Bickerstaff (released), Josh McCrone (Penrith)

Laurie Daley
Laurie Daley in his glory days

Former Australian and Canberra Raiders captain, Laurie Daley, will be returning to his former club to begin a mentoring role with Canberra's young halves in 2008.

Juggling the informal Raiders' role in between his commitments for Channel 9, the former five-eighth is keen to return to the club where he spent seven glorious years, playing 244 games including 3 premierships (1989, 1990 and 1994).

Daley, who will coach Country Origin in 2008, is keen to exert some influence on Todd Carney, the 21-year-old halfback tipped for representative football in the future.

Todd Carney
Will Carney benefit from Daley's experience and mentoring?

The rebellious Carney has twice had his licence suspended because of drink-driving charges and was last year issued with 200 hours community service after being involved in a police pursuit.

"He's an exciting player and he would have found out a lot about himself last year when he had that moment in time he'd like to forget," Daley said.

"He's aware he's got to be a leader at the club and his off-field indiscretions need to be put behind him. He needs to learn from those and move forward."

"The talent he does possess and the shortage of players in the halves for NSW and NSW country, he'd be in the firing line. He's certainly got the potential to play representative football," Daley added.

When asked about his return to the club, the league legend said that "I love the club and if I can help them in some way, shape or form, I will,".

The Canberra Raiders overcame a late Penrith Panthers charge, and three disallowed tries by video referee Chris Ward, to secure an entertaining 34-30 victory at Canberra Stadium on Friday night.

Three tries in the final eight minutes by a fast finishing Panthers side almost saw them snatch a morale boosting victory, with Penrith’s lack of a recognised goal kicker costing them dearly.

Canberra opened the scoring in just the ninth minute, with a determined charge by centre Phil Graham seeing him crash through five defenders to score. Raiders half Michael Dobson duly converted to hand the home side an early 6-0 advantage.

Some ordinary Raiders defence allowed the Panther to equalise just seven minutes later, with a bullocking run off the scrum base by Frank Pritchard saw the man mountain crash over.

Nick Youngquest’s conversion levelled the scores at 6-all after 18 minutes.

The visitors went further ahead in the 24th minute through a breathtaking team try, eventually scored by rookie centre Geoff Daniela.

In what was one of the more bizarre tries of the season, Canberra’s back three failed to adequately clean up a Craig Gower bomb, with the Panthers skipper launching a second cross field kick in the matter if five seconds to find an unmarked Daniela wide out.

Youngquest failed with his sideline conversion attempt, but the visitors held a handy 10-6 lead.

Dobson did it all himself in the 35th minute, with the quicksilver half darting through some soft Panthers goal line defence to score a great solo converted try.

A monumental error by replacement Panthers fullback Richie Williams allowed rookie Raiders winger Bronx Goodwin to score on the stroke of half-time. A determined chase by Goodwin left Williams red faced, with the flying winger grounding the ball as Williams was quite content to watch the ball dribble over the dead ball line.

Dobson had no problems with the conversion, sending the home side to the break with a handy 18-10 advantage.

With both teams desperate to secure the two competition points, it was a much more enterprising start to the second half.

A majestic Gower try in the 44th minute closed the gap to just four points, but the Raiders hit straight back with a second try to Graham just four minutes later.

Raiders pivot Todd Carney scored a scintillating 40 metre solo try in the 54th minute, with Graham’s third try of the night all but sealing victory for the home side.

Late tries to Daniela, Maurice Blair and Michael Jennings added some respectability to the score line, with the Raiders now only two points outside the top eight.

Canberra now travels to Dairy Farmers Stadium next Saturday night to face of against the North Queensland Cowboys, whilst the Panthers will play host to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, also on Saturday night.

Raiders hammer Titans

July 15th 2007 05:48
The Canberra Raiders revived their semi-final aspirations with a 56-10 thrashing of an injury riddled Gold Coast Titans at Canberra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Gold Coast Titans horror injury toll continued, with Titans co-captain Scott Prince re-injuring his troublesome collarbone and Matthew Petersen suffering knee ligament damage in the ten tries to two carve up.

Canberra signalled their intentions early, with the Raiders opening the scoring off their first set of six. Raiders prop Troy Thompson charged through some soft Titans centre field defence, with Canberra winger Bronx Goodwin finishing off a scintillating forty metre movement.

Michael Dobson converted from right in front to hand the home side a 6-0 lead after just three minutes of play.

The Gold Coast hit back in the 18th minute, with a determined Mark Minichiello charge finished off by a flying Luke O’Dwyer. Titans centre Brett Delaney booted it from wide out to level the scores at six all.

The Titans extended their lead just nine minutes later, with a precision Josh Lewis grubber pounced on by Delaney in the corner. The rangy Gold Coast’s centre conversion attempt swung wide in the breeze to push the visitors out to a 10-6 lead.

With both defences starting to tire, it was the Raiders that struck next with a simple barge over try to Michael Weyman. Dobson had no problems from right in front to edge the home side back in front to 12-10.

A brilliant solo effort by Canberra skipper Alan Tongue just two minutes later allowed the Raiders to extend their lead, with the tireless lock grubbering and regathering to score. Dobson nailed another simple conversion to push the home team out to an 18-10 advantage.

Canberra finished off an electrifying first half with a fourth try to replacement forward Joe Picker, with Dobson’s fourth goal handing the home side a 24-10 half time lead.

The Raiders started the second half full of running, with Canberra fullback William Zillman extending the home sides lead in the 48th minute.

With Titans players Scott Prince and Brett Delaney struggling out wide with shoulder injuries, Raiders half Dobson popped a perfect chip through for Zillman to score. Dobson failed with the sideline conversion, but Canberra was well in control at 30-10.

With the Titans tiring noticeably, Dobson showed some dazzling footwork to dance through the Gold Coast forwards to score under the posts. The crafty half converted his own try to leave the Raiders dominating 34-10.

A converted try to Raiders winger David Milne in the 64th minute sealed the Raiders victory, with further tries to David Milne, Phil Graham and Todd Carney completing the 56-10 rout.

The Raiders now face off against the Melbourne Storm next Saturday night, with the Titans to host the Canterbury Bulldogs next Friday night at Carrara Stadium.

Raiders hammer Eels

June 9th 2007 09:39
The Canberra Raiders stormed back into the winners circle in emphatic fashion, registering a 38-10 hammering of the Parramatta Eels at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night.

In a match which saw Ben Smith, Mark Riddell and Michael Weyman all sin binned for ten minutes, the Raiders win was built around a four try opening twelve minute burst by the rampant home team.

The home side were first to score through a simple try to backrower Glen Turner. Creative Raiders half Michael Dobson floated across field before linking up with a rampaging Turner to cross under the posts. Dobson converted from right in front to gift the Raiders the perfect start.

Canberra were in again just three minutes later, with crafty five-eight Terry Campese scoring off some brilliant second phase play. Dobson nailed his second simple conversion to push the Green Machine out to a 12-0 lead.

In what was a whirlwind start for the rampant Raiders, Turner crossed for his second try inside the opening ten minutes. A cross field Dobson bomb was spilt by Eels winger Eric Grothe straight into the hands of a thankful Turner to dot down beside the sticks. Dobson’s third goal pushed the Raiders out to an amazing 18-0 lead after just ten minutes.

In one of the most bizarre starts to a match, the home side crossed for their fourth try inside the opening twelve minutes through a barnstorming barge over try to prop Scott Logan. Another easy conversion to Dobson made it 24-0.

Canberra crossed for their fifth try in the 37th minute, with a blatant forward pass from Alan Tongue sending Colin Best off on a 50 metre movement downfield, before linking up with a flying David Milne to score. Dobson duly converted to hand the home side a commanding 30-0 lead at the break.

The Eels stormed back into the game just after the restart, with a brilliant seventy metre movement finished off by a flying Luke Burt in the corner. Burt’s sideline conversion just swung wide to leave the Eels down 30-4 at the 45th minute.

Just as Parramatta were starting to mount some sustained pressure, a sixty metre intercept by Best got the home side right back on the attack. Off the next very play, Raiders fullback William Zillman crossed out wide to push the score out to 34-4. Dobson missed his first conversion of the night, but the Raiders held an unassailable thirty point lead.

Debutant Raiders centre got in on the try scoring action with a 57th minute try, with Dobson again failing to convert.

The fire wasn’t entirely out of the Eels though, with tenacious hooker PJ Marsh crossing under the posts off a great Blake Green pass. Burt nailed the simple conversion to make it 38-10 with fifteen minutes left to play.

But the defensive workload that the visitors were forced to commit in the first half finally took its toll, with the Eels lacking the energy to mount any kind of pressure in the closing stages.

The Raiders were quite to content to shut down the match in the final moments, content in the fact that their seven tries to two victory should lift them back into the top eight at the completion of the Round 13 action.

A shell shocked Eels team will now look for revenge against the St George-Illawarra Dragons at Parramatta Stadium next Sunday afternoon, whilst the Canberra Raiders will travel to Energy Australia Stadium next Monday night to meet the Newcastle Knights.

Dobson to stay in Canberra

June 8th 2007 05:42
MEDIA RELEASE - Canberra Raiders

canberra raiders

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders today announced that they have secured the services of halfback Michael Dobson until the end of the 2008 NRL season.

Dobson was snapped up by the Raiders as a 16 year old, but opted to take up an English Super League contract with the Wigan Warriors, before finishing his European sojourn with a starring stint with the Les Catalans Dragons last season.

The young half made his NRL debut in this years Ronud one clash against the Manly Sea-Eagles, and has starred in eleven of the Raiders twelve matches to date.

Dobson said he is glad to have his future at the club for next season
taken care of, and he would now look to repay the favour with some good
form for the Raiders.

"It's been hanging over my head for a few weeks now but it's done now
and I know what I'm doing next year," Dobson said. "It gives me and the
club an opportunity to know where we're both at. I've only played eleven
games so it gives me an opportunity to back myself next year and
hopefully I can prove myself."

Raiders General Manager Don Furner said the club was ecstatic that
Dobson was staying with the club for at least one more season, but hoped
to increase that time frame early in 2008.

"It's great to have Michael signed up for another year, and good to do
it before we lost him to another club," Furner said. "It's a one year
deal and I would like to think that we would be sitting down with him
early next year and extending that as well."

Rampant Raiders rout Dragons

May 25th 2007 13:06
The Canberra Raiders have a put a week of off field drama behind them by registering a 30-6 thrashing of a mistake riddled St George-Illawarra Dragons outfit at a chilly Canberra Stadium on Friday night.

With the thermometer recording an icy 6 degrees, the rampant Raiders ran riot with a five tries to one shut out of a disjointed Dragons outfit, with rangy Canberra centre Adrian Purtell crossing for a rare hat trick.

The home team burst out of the blocks using the greasy surface to their advantage, with Raiders kickers Terry Campese and Michael Dobson continuously driving the big Dragons around with booming long kicks.

Rookie Canberra winger Bronx Goodwin looked to have opened the scoring in just the 5th minute, with a pin point Dobson chip kick seemingly grounded by the young winger in the corner. But after countless television replays, video referee Phil Cooley ruled that Goodwin’s heel had gone touch in goal, denying the youngster his first NRL try.

With the Raiders dominating both possession and field position, it was no surprise to see the home team post first points through Purtell in the 27th minute. Against the run of play and with the Dragons right on the attack, Purtell intercepted a Matthew Head pass to race 95 metres and score the first try. Canberra half Michael Dobson had no problems in converting to put the home side up by 6-0.

Purtell crossed for his second try eleven minutes later, after a William Zillman break was duly supported by the Raiders centre to dot down beside the posts. Dobson booted yet another easy conversion to put Canberra out to a 12-0 lead at the break.

With inspirational Dragons fullback Ben Hornby unable to return after the break to a calf muscle injury, the visitors were always going to struggle against a focussed opposition in the slippery conditions.

Speedy Canberra fullback Zillman scored the home teams third try of the night in the 54th minute after supporting a half break by Raiders skipper Alan Tongue, with the zippy Zillman showing a clear pair of heels to the chasing Dragons defenders. Dobson nailed his third straight conversion of the night to put the home side out to a commanding 18-0 lead.

With St George- Illawarra struggling to control the ball in the greasy conditions, it was a barnstorming try to Neville Costigan in the 60th minute that put the result beyond doubt.

Things were looking embarrassing fro the visitors when Purtell crossed for his third try in the 68th minute, with Dobson’s fifth conversion of the night putting the Raiders out to an unassailable 30-0 lead.

But to the Dragons credit, they never stopped trying, and they were finally rewarded with a try to representative centre Matt Cooper in the 71st minute. Backing up from Wednesday night’s bruising State of Origin encounter, Cooper scored a consolation converted try to add some respectability to the scoreboard.

The Canberra Raiders now travel up to Carrara Stadium next Sunday to meet the Gold Coast Titans, whilst St George-Illawarra play host to the Brisbane Broncos at Oki Jubilee Stadium next Friday night.

Raiders defeat lacklustre Bunnies

May 12th 2007 12:02
The Canberra Raiders recorded an upset 16-10 victory over a lacklustre South Sydney on Saturday night, with the uninspired Rabbitohs ruing a host of bombed try scoring opportunities.

In a match that never really reached any great heights in terms of excitement, Canberra made the most of their limited chances in the second half, with the Rabbitohs squandering numerous try scoring opportunities to record their third straight loss by six points or less.

In a dour and lacklustre opening half, both teams worked their way into ideal scoring positions but lacked the composure and the discipline to convert those opportunities.

Souths fullback David Peachey casualness almost cost the home side an early try in the 10th minute, with Raiders half Todd Carney losing control of the ball in attempting to ground his own grubber kick, with Peachey’s lack of urgency highlighting the attitude of the South Sydney team on the night.

Both sides came within inches of opening the scoring in the opening half hour, with a brilliant cover defending tackle from Nathan Merritt preventing rookie Raiders winger Bronx Goodwin from scoring in the corner, whilst desperate Canberra goal line defence prevented the Rabbitohs Shannon Hegarty from barging over.

After being denied a try earlier by the match officials, a bullocking run by Hegarty finally got the home team on the board in the 27th minute, with Souths half Joe Williams nailing the easy conversion to hand the Rabbitohs an uninspiring 6-0 advantage.

With both teams preferring to continue with the safety first football approach, the simple ruck and kick play continued for the remainder of the first half, with the Rabbitohs taking an uneventful 6-0 lead to the break.

A brilliant individual effort by Raiders winger David Milne finally got the crowd enthused early in the second half, with the rookie Raiders winger scoring under the posts after turning Peachey inside out on a 65 metre run. With regular Canberra goal kicker Michael Dobson relegated to Premier League for the week, crafty half Todd Carney assumed the goal kicking duties, nailing the easy conversion to level the scores at 6 all.

However, two Williams’s penalty goals in the 57th and 61st minutes enabled Souths to blow back out to a 10-6 lead, with the young Raiders defence continuously denying some disjointed Rabbitohs attack.

But just as Souths looked as if they would go on with it, consecutive Rabbitohs handling errors handed the Raiders good field position. After back to back sets, a beautiful offload from Raiders prop Neville Costigan put Carney over untouched, with the nippy half’s second conversion putting the visitors in front for the first time in the match.

The Rabbitohs looked to have snatched a scrappy victory with six minutes left on the clock, however video referee Steve Nash ruled that Hegarty had knocked on in the process of attempting to score the match winner.

Canberra centre Adrian Purtell’s 77th minute try in the corner ensured an upset victory for the visiting Raiders, with Canberra going onto record their fourth victory of the season, 16-10.

Both South Sydney and the Canberra Raiders now enjoy a week off courtesy of the Round eleven bye.

Raiders hold off gallant Roosters

April 16th 2007 06:56
Attacking rugby league reined at Canberra Stadium tonight, with the Canberra Raiders holding off a fast finishing Sydney Roosters outfit to record just their second victory of the season, 37-28.

On a typically cool Canberra night, the home side were up 32-18 with 25 minutes to play, before the star studded Roosters team stormed home with three tries to almost snatch an unlikely victory.

The home side was forced to paly the majority of the second half without injured half Michael Dobson (back), fullback William Zillman (head cut) and forwards Trevor Thurling and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (concussion), allowing the visitors to get within a converted try to cause an upset victory.

Yet to record a victory so far this season, the fired up Roosters opened the scoring in the sixth minute through a neat Shaun Kenny-Dowall try, with a brilliant Braith Anasta cut out pass hitting the flying winger right in the chest to dot down in the corner. Rooster’s goal kicking backrower Craig Fitzgibbon converted to hand the visitors an early 6-0 advantage.

Canberra’s reply was quick smart, with a brilliant solo effort by Raiders five-eight Todd Carney getting the home team on the board five minutes later. Dobson made no mistakes with the conversion from right in front, and the scores were level at 6 all after 14 minutes.

The Raiders scored their second try in the 20th minute with a try to centre Adrian Purtell, with video referee Phil Cooley deciding that Purtell’s momentum carried him over the tryline amidst the attention of Kenny-Dowall. Dobson nailed another easy conversion and the Raiders went ahead 12-6.

The Roosters had a perfect opportunity to level the scores in the 24th minute when a sensational Craig Wing one armed off load was dropped by an unmarked Anasta over the tryline.

However, Anasta made amends for his earlier indiscretion with a mesmerising show and go run, allowing him to slice through some flimsy Raiders defence to cross out wide. Fitzgibbon nailed his second conversion of the night to level the scores at 12 all after half an hour.

The Raiders were in again just two minutes later with a bizarre try to debutant Raiders winger Brett Kelly. An impressive looping pass from Lincoln Withers allowed Phil Graham to set sail for the tryline, with only Roosters fullback one on one strip preventing the speedy centre from scoring. Unfortunately the ball rolled free from Minichiello’s grasp, allowing the rookie winger to double back and dive over in the corner. A lower back injury to Dobson saw Todd Carney assume the goal kicking responsibilities, with the Raiders five-eight booting a sensational goal from the touchline to put the Raiders ahead, 18-12.

A contentious penalty was awarded to the home side in the 35th minute, with yet another controversial shepherding decision going against the Roosters, allowing Carney to add a further two points.

Purtell crossed for his second try right on the stroke of half time, through another bizarre mistake from the Sydney side. The Roosters attempted to spread the ball wide just seconds before the halftime siren, with loose pass from Anasta being toed ahead by Raiders centre Phil Graham for Purtell to outpace the Roosters defenders to score. Carney’s simple conversion allowed the home team to go to the sheds with a handy 26-12 lead.

It took just two minutes into the second stanza for the Raiders to score their fifth try, with some pathetic Sydney goal line defence allowing Carney to stroll over for his second try of the night. The diminutive Raiders five-eight nailed his third kick for the night, and another Monday night massacre at Canberra Stadium looked likely at 32-12.

An inspirational bullocking try to Roosters hooker Craig Wing in the 51st minute gave the visitors a sniff, with Fitzgibbon’s conversion making it 32-18.

Canberra’s injury crisis allowed the Roosters to cross again just seven minutes later, when a towering Anasta bomb was dropped by rookie Raiders winger Brett Kelly for Sydney centre Sia Soliola to dot down. Fitzgibbons conversion attempt cannoned into the right hand upright, but the Roosters were back in the game at 32-22.

When Roosters Test lock Anthony Tupou ran through a yawning gap to score in the 71st minute, the Canberra crowd became hushed as the visitors looked as if they would run over the home town heroes.

But veteran Raiders winger Colin Best ensured the Raiders faithful would go home happy when he crossed out wide in the 77th minute, with Canberra skipper Alan Tongue’s last minute field goal sealing the nine point victory.

While the Roosters get next weekend off courtesy of the bye, the Canberra Raiders face a imposing mission next Saturday night when they take on the Cronulla Sharks at Toyota Park.

Canberra Raiders VS Sydney Roosters @ Canberra Stadium, 7pm, 16/04/2007

Regardless of their current premiership standings, tonight’s clash between the last placed Roosters and the second last placed Raiders should still provide plenty of intrigue and excitement.

So far winless for the season, the Sydney Roosters have the talent at their disposal to be challenging for a top 8 position, but for some mysterious reason they are struggling for both confidence and on field direction. While coach Chris Anderson’s experiment of blooding young half Mitchell Pearce has had mixed results thus far, the Roosters still possess the experience of Anasta, Wing, Roberts and Minichiello to turn too when the going gets tough.

Canberra on the other hand has no such luxuries in terms of experience to turn to, with players like Withers, Carney and Tongue now the senior players of the team. What coach Neil Henry does have in his young charges is an abundance of belief, skill and confidence. While the Raiders have some of the most impressive young backline players at their disposal, it is their underrated forward pack full of toilers that is the ‘Green Machine’s’ real strength.

Tonight’s match will provide plenty of fireworks with the Roosters chasing their first win of the season, whilst the Raiders will be looking to make amends for their shocking last start thrashing at the hands of Parramatta last Saturday night.

I am going to stick with the youthful Raiders to win this in a tight, high scoring affair, purely based on the fact that Canberra have a bit more confidence in their play, compared to that of their struggling Bondi counterparts.

The Canberra Raiders caused the upset of the premierships third Round tonight, scoring a thumping 48-18 victory over a mistake riddled Newcastle Knights outfit at Canberra Stadium tonight.

On a typically cold Canberra night, a young and enterprising Canberra Raiders team completely dominated their more experienced Newcastle rivals for the entire second half, running in five converted tries to complete a thirty point flogging over the hapless Knights.

As was expected, Newcastle dominated the early froward exchanges with Johns showing a little rustiness in his first game of rugby league since sustaining concussion in the season opener against Canterbury.

A booming Andrew Johns 40/20 kick put the Knights on the attack early, with veteran winger Adam McDougall dotting down in the corner to score the opening try of the night. Accepting a pass from dummy half, Johns fired a thirty metre spiral cut out pass to rookie Cory Paterson, who instinctively batted the ball onto centre George Carmont, who drew and passed to find a flying Adam McDougall. Johns signalled his return from injury by nailing a sideline conversion to give the Knights a handy 6-0 lead after just eight minutes.

The Raiders reply was even more spectacular, with a smartly executed scrum move play allowing fullback William Zillman to burst clear, linking up with Phil Graham who sped forty metres downfield. From the ensuing play the ball, Zillman floated across field finding Todd Carney, who unleashed a massive 30 metre spiral cut out pass to Marshall Chalk who scored in the opposite corner. Dobson failed to land the sideline conversion, but the home crowd had come alive at 6-4 after 15 minutes.

The home side were in again just four minutes later after Carney grubbered through for Lincoln Withers to dot down under the posts. Dobson didn’t miss the kick this time, and the Raiders held a shock 10-6 advantage.

The home crowd came alight again in the 29th minute when Dobson placed a perfect little chip kick over the Knights defence for Zillman to catch and veer away from Knights fullback Kurt Gidley to score adjacent to the posts. Dobson nailed the easy conversion, and the Raiders were on a roll at 16-6.

The foresight of Andrew Johns got the Knights back into the contest, with the crafty half floating a perfect long pass to Milton Thaiday to score next to the posts. Johns converted to make it game on at 16-12 after 35 minutes.

Todd Carney had a chance to extend their lead right on the halftime siren, but video referee Steve Nash ruled that the nippy Raiders five-eight lost control whilst attempting to plant the ball over the line.

A penalty goal to Michael Dobson in the 43rd minute opened the second half scoring, after Knights centre George Carmont was ruled to have illegally taken out a Canberra kick chaser.

But just when the home side looked to be gaining the ascendency, a Todd Carney mistake put the Knights back on the attack, with impressive rookie Cory Paterson diving over in the corner from a misguided Andrew Johns bomb. Johns had no problem in converting from the sideline, and the score was now locked up at 18 all after 46 minutes.

William Zillman scored his second try in the 52nd minute, with the electric fullback bursting onto a Dane Tilse pass and racing forty metres to score out wide. Dobson nailed his most accurate conversion of the night, and the Raiders were firing at 24-18.

Canberra went further ahead in the 60th minute, when rampaging Raider Scott Logan somehow planted the ball amidst the efforts of four Knights defenders. Dobson nailed his fifth shot of the night, and the Raiders were in complete control at 30-18.

Colin Best got in on the try scoring frenzy when he accepted a terrific three man cut out pass from Todd Carney, with the much travelled winger sliding over in the corner to put the result beyond on doubt. Dobson’s goal kicking was growing in confidence, this time nailing a sideline conversion to put the home side up 36-18.

Try scoring machine Phil Graham got on the scorers list when he pounced on a well placed Dobson grubber kick in the 70th minute, with another Dobson sideline conversion making the score line embarrassing for the Knights at 42-18.

Yet another brilliant scrum base kick from wily half Michael Dobson, saw the flying Zillman cross for his hat trick in the last minute, with Dobson’s conversion completing a 48-18 rout.

Veteran Newcastle forward capped off a demoralising return to his old home ground, sustaining an injury to his ribs early in the second half, whilst their were no such concerns for the home team.

The demoralised Newcastle Knights now face a rampant Melbourne Storm side at home on Easter Saturday, whilst the new look ‘Green Machine’ travel to Parramatta Stadium to take on the Eels that same night.

Canberra Raiders VS Newcastle Knights @ Canberra Stadium, 2/04/07

Tonights instalment of Monday Night Football pits a young Canberra Raiders outfit against a Newcastle Knights team choc full of experience.

Champion Newcastle half Andrew Johns returns from injury at Canberra Stadium tonight, allowing Knights coach Brian Smith the luxury of having Johns, Jarrod Mullen and Kurt Gidley running the show. And this is where Newcastle have a massive edge over the Raiders halves of Tod Carney and MIchael Dobson.

While Newcastle may have the edge in experience, the Raiders have a distinct advantage in raw pace out wide, with Colin Best, Phil Graham and William Zillman some of the quickest men in the NRL. Crafty half Dobson will have to be watched closely by the Knights defence, as new Raiders coach Neil Henry has devised set plays to capitalise on the outside mens pace.

The Raiders always perform well at night on their home ground, so it will be no surprise to see the home side give a good account of themselves. With Newcastle having an edge in skill and experience, expect the Knights to escape with the two competition points in a close encounter.

Canberra Raiders Round 3 Analysis

March 28th 2007 09:49

The Raiders lack of experience probably cost them two competition points last Saturday night against the Storm, with the home side dominating the competition favourites for the majority of the match.

Canberra were fantastic in defence all night, and had it not been for three defensive lapses, than they would have scored one of the upsets of the season. With seven regular first graders still on the injured / suspended list for coach Neil Henry, the 'Green Machine' will once again run out an inexperienced line up against a more experienced Newcastle side.

Much of Canberra's hopes will rest in the hands of new half Michael Dobson, who showed some impressive skills in the loss to the Storm. Dobson's mature and level head has allowed Todd Carney a free reign to set up his outside backs, and combine that with the skill of hooker Lincoln Withers, and the Raiders have a creative attacking formation.

Canberra Raiders VS Melbourne Storm @ Canberra Raiders
Saturday, 24th March, 2007

ANALYSIS
This match shapes up as somewhat of a mismatch – Melbourne, the team that everyone is tipping to take the title, and Canberra, the team most are declaring as wooden spoon favourites.

But even though the Raiders lost 32-6 last week against Manly, you can rest assured that Canberra will be a different team at home on a chilly Saturday night. Coach Neil Henry has the most youthful and inexperienced teams in the competition, but with youth comes exuberance and speed, and the Raiders are probably one of only three teams that can compete with Melbourne in the pure pace department.

Melbourne should be too strong for the Canberra side, with a settled half/hooker combination and their structured defence being their strong points. Canberra struggled to break the Manly defence last week, and a shocking 58% completion rate meant that they were forced to defend for much of the match. If the Raiders can’t control the football this week, then you can expect the creative Storm backs to rack up a cricket score.
Melbourne Storm to win this one.

Canberra Raiders Round 1

Canberra Raiders -

Inheriting a team that many have tipped for the wooden spoon, new Raiders Coach Neil Henry has named an experienced line-up for their tough opening round clash against the Sea-Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Saturday night.

New signings Colin Best, Michael Dobson, Dane Tilse, Glen Turner, Matt Bickerstaff, Andrew Dunemann, Neville Costigan and Scott Logan all make their debut for the Green Machine, with the half Dobson under the most pressure to succeed.

Exciting young fullback Wiliam Zillman gets his chance ahead of Bronx Goodwin in the number one jersey vacated by Clinton Schifcofske, with red headed workhorse Alan Tongue given the job of leading his team out in front of the Brookvale faithful.

Cronulla look to break the Drought -NRL Off Season Wrap

Cronulla Sharks Off Season News Snippets -

* The Sharks have signed lower grade Wests Tigers hooker Isaac De Gois for the next two seasons. De Gois left the Tigers as he was struggling to crack a first grade spot with Robbie Farah and Stuart Flannagan ahead of him, and will hope to share the hooking duties in 2007 with Kevin Kingston and utility Brett Kearney.

* Kangaroos Coach and new Sharks Coach Ricky Stuart has settled in nicely in the Shire over the past two weeks, along with new recruits Josh Hannay, Craig Stapleton, Misi Taulapapa, Paul Stephenson, Fraser Anderson, Dustin Cooper and now Isaac De Gois. Insiders say that Stuart has been a 'breath of fesh air' in the Shire, and his professionalism and committment are sure to get the Sharks firing in '07.

Cronulla Sharks Off Season Gossip -

* One of the big rumours doing the rugby league rounds is that current Bulldog enforcer Mark O'Meley is set to join the Shire in 2008. Not sure how truthful this gossip is, as 'Shrek' has also been linked to the Sydney Roosters, and if Canterbury do lose Willie Mason to the NFL and Sonny Bill Williams to rugby union, than you can be sure that O'Meley will receive that contract upgrade he is so desperately seeking.
