Laurie Daley
Laurie Daley in his glory days

Former Australian and Canberra Raiders captain, Laurie Daley, will be returning to his former club to begin a mentoring role with Canberra's young halves in 2008.

Juggling the informal Raiders' role in between his commitments for Channel 9, the former five-eighth is keen to return to the club where he spent seven glorious years, playing 244 games including 3 premierships (1989, 1990 and 1994).

Daley, who will coach Country Origin in 2008, is keen to exert some influence on Todd Carney, the 21-year-old halfback tipped for representative football in the future.

Will Carney benefit from Daley's experience and mentoring?

The rebellious Carney has twice had his licence suspended because of drink-driving charges and was last year issued with 200 hours community service after being involved in a police pursuit.

"He's an exciting player and he would have found out a lot about himself last year when he had that moment in time he'd like to forget," Daley said.

"He's aware he's got to be a leader at the club and his off-field indiscretions need to be put behind him. He needs to learn from those and move forward."

"The talent he does possess and the shortage of players in the halves for NSW and NSW country, he'd be in the firing line. He's certainly got the potential to play representative football," Daley added.

When asked about his return to the club, the league legend said that "I love the club and if I can help them in some way, shape or form, I will,".

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have today announced the sigining of Sydney Roosters centre Joel Monaghan on a new three year deal as of 2008.

Monaghan, a Canberra junior, made his debut with the Raiders in 2001 and played 66 matches for the Green Machine, before moving to Sydney to join the Roosters at the start of the 2005 season.

Now after three seasons with the tri-colours Monaghan returns to his home town and home club, and said he is looking forward to linking up with some former team mates back in Canberra.

"I'm looking forward to coming back to Canberra and especially being able to play in front of my parents, Stu and Mary again," he said.

"Also, linking up with some old mates, so it's going to be good for me and hopefully the club."

Raiders General Manager Don Furner said it's great to have Monaghan return to the club where he began his career, and looked forward to what he could bring to the young Raiders back line.

"Joel is a Canberra boy and I think it's great to have him come back to the club where his career began," Furner said.

"We have a young backline with plenty of talent, and Joel gives us the experienced player that we need to help them continue their development."
