Maroon tidal wave swamps Blues
June 11th 2008 12:14
The Queensland Maroons have won one of the most one-sided Origin matches in history, recording a 30-0 thrashing of a shell shocked New South Wales Blues at a rowdy Suncorp Stadium tonight.
After copping a caning for their sub-standard performance in Origin 1, a pumped up Maroons team produced a four try blockout in front of 52,416 adoring Brisbane fans, equalling the record for the biggest winning margin for a Queenland team in the process.
New South Wales had no answer to the Maroons driving defence and breathtaking attack, with Queensland centre Greg Inglis proving a constant menace to the Blues right hand defence all night.
The Maroons other centre Brent Tate produced a phenomenal defensive effort with 29 tackles, while half Johnathan Thurston capped a busy night with seven goals from seven attempts.
A fired up Maroons outift burst out of the blocks thanks to a brilliant run from centre Greg Inglis, the giant Maroons centre swatting Blues defenders aside in a scintialting fifty metre burst, before linking with winger Darius Boyd to open the scoring.
Johnathan Thurston’s 7th minute conversion allowed Queensland to push out to an early 6-0 advantage.
The Inglis-Boyd combination worked their magic for the Maroons second try of the night, the Storm centre again turning the Blues Mark Gasnier inside out on yet another long run, beofre firing a doubtful pass onto Boyd for his second on debut.
Thurston’s second conversion, and a further penalty goal on the half hour provided a deserved 14-0 lead, with the Blues struggling against a pumped up Maroons side spurred on by their parochial home crowd.
Queensland closed out a dominant first half with another Thurston penalty goal right on the stroke of half-time, with a slick Maroons team taking a 16-0 lead at the break.
After a brutal start to the second half, Thurston pushed the Maroons out to what seemed an unasailable 18-0 lead when he booted his fifth goal for a New South Wales ruck infringement,
And Queensland were home and hosed when referee Tony Archer ruled that Ben Hannant had crashed over for a 24-0 lead in the 65th minute, with teenage Storm sensation Israel Folau capping a fine game with his own four-pointer just four minutes later.
