MEDIA RELEASE - North Queensland Cowboys

North Queensland Cowboys coach Graham Murray has named representative stars Johnathan Thurston and Carl Webb in an extended squad for this Saturday's preliminary clash with the Manly Sea-Eagles at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Webb has been named to start the match despite missing last weeks victory over the New Zealand Warriors through injury, while playmaking halfback Thurston's hopes rely soley in the hands of the NRL judiciary.

Thurston will front the judiciary on Wednesday night to contest a downgrade against a grade one dangerous throw charge resulting from a fifth minute tackle in last Sunday's 49-12 thumping of the Warriors.

Round 4 NRL - Cowboys VS Tigers

April 7th 2007 06:03
NQ Cowboys VS Wests Tigers @ Dairy Farmers Stadium, 7.30pm, 7/04/07

North Queensland have once again started the season ablaze, with their scintilating attack shooting them to the top of the competition. The combination of Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen has been simply electric for the Cowboys, with the vision of new five-eight Jason Smith creating plenty of oppurtunities on the edges.

The Tigers are yet to notch their first win for season 2007, but have been in with a chance of winning all three games against the Storm, Sea-Eagles and Eels. Last weeks golden point loss was especially heart breaking, as the West Sydney franchise was the dominant team for most of the match.

The clash at Dairy Farmers Stadium always produces an exciting tussle, with the tigers desperation coupled with the breath taking form of the Cowboys sure to excite the Townsville faithful.

With the eveness and desperation of both of these sides, it is yet another toss of the coin job to predict a winner here. If form is any indicator, than look for a comfortable Cowboys victory, but youcan never discount the pluck of the young Tigers outfit. I am going to stick with the Cowboys in a high scoring thriller.

Melbourne Storm VS New Zealand Warriors @ Olympic Park, 1/04/2007

This clash promises to be the match of the season so far, with the undefeated New Zealand Warriors meeting the premiership favourite Melbourne Storm at Olympic Park on Sunday.

With both sides possessing huge forward packs and devastatingly skilful backs, this match could well see a glutton of breathtaking tries scored, to entertain the vocal Olympic Park crowd.

The Warriors head to the Storm ‘graveyard’ as the only team to defeat the 2006 grand finalists on home soil last year, and with the form that the New Zealand team is displaying at the moment, they could well go close to leaving victorious again.

New Zealand have been both clinical and majestic in their crushing defeats of the Eels and Broncos in past weeks, with new fullback Wade McKinnon in sensational form at the back. The Warriors forward pack has always displayed their high skill levels in seasons past, but this year it has been the tenacity in their defence that has impressed.

The Storm have been solid in their opening two victories over the Tigers and Raiders, but have never really got out of second gear in either of those games. The blinding speed of Billy Slater kept the Storm ahead of Canberra last Saturday night, with two memorable line breaks leading directly to Melbourne tries.

It is hard to say who will be the victor in this match, as there is essentially nothing between these two sides. If the game is tight and if it comes down to a piece of individual brilliance, than look to either Slater or Inglis to get the Storm side home.

Melbourne Storm –
Billy Slater, Matt Geyer, Matt King, Anthony Quinn, Israel Folau, Greg Inglis, Cooper Cronk, Antonio Kaufusi, Cameron Smith, Brett White, Jeremy Smith, Ryan Hoffman, Dallas Johnson
Bench - Michael Crocker, Jeff Lima, Ben Cross, James Aubusson, Ryan Shortland

New Zealand Warriors –
Wade McKinnon, Michael Crockett, Tony Martin, Lance Hohaia, Manu Vatuvei, Michael Witt, Grant Rovelli, Ruben Wiki (vc), George Gatis, Steve Price ©, Simon Mannering, Logan Swann, Micheal Luck
Bench - Nathan Fien, Evarn Tuimavave, Epalahame Lauaki, Sam Rapira
