Parramatta Eels VS Canberra Raiders @ Parramatta Stadium, 7.30pm, 7/04/07

In one of the toughest games of the Round to tip, the Parramatta Eels finally got on the winners list last Friday night, albeit on the back of a golden point Luke Burt penalty goal against the Wests Tigers.

The Eels will have hopefully worked on some attacking moves this week at training, after two of their three tries against the Tigers came from intercepts. The Eels new half combination of Brett Finch and Tim Smith are yet to form the lethal combination that they threaten to be, but if they can get the ball out wide with space, the likes of Tahu, Grothe, Hayne, Burt and Ben Smith have both the pace and skill to compete with any backline in the competition.

Canberra were simply awesome in the second half against the hapless Knights last Monday, with the halves combination of Todd Carney and Michael Dobson absolutely brilliant at times. Rookie fullback William Zillman showed why the Canberra powers that be let Clinton Schifofske go, with the former junior Kangaroo scintilating in crossing for his hat trick of tries.

The Eels have lost centre Tahu and inspirational skipper Cayless for this clash, with Joel Reddy and either Fuifui Moimoi or Richard Faa'oso to replace the Kiwi Test prop. Canberra on the other hand have no injury concerns.

In a toss of the coin job, I am going for a second successive Eels victory, purely on the back of their vocal home crowd. This could turn into a high scoring affair, so look for either Hayne, Grothe, Zillman or Graham as first try scorers.

Parramatta VS Wests Match Preview

March 30th 2007 04:21
Parramatta Eels VS Wests Tigers @ Parramatta Stadium, 8pm, 30/03/2007

Still yet to open their premiership account for season 2007, the Eels and Tigers square off at Parramatta Stadium tonight in a bid to arrest their poor early season form. Neither team were anywhere near their best last round, with the Eels managing a completion rate of less then 50%, whilst the Tigers were only marginally better with their 61% completion rate.

Returning for the home side is the inspirational Nathan Hindmarsh and bullocking winger Eric Grothe, and the addition of these two NSW representatives should boost the Eels chances. While doubt still remains over Grothe’s availability for this match (Joel Reddy is on standby), the return of Hindmarsh is sure to rectify the Eels current defensive frailties. Giant Prop Fuifui Moimoi is still at least a week from returning from a knee injury, with the Parramatta side otherwise at full strength.

The Tigers are also basically at full strength for this clash, with only centre Paul Whatuira unavailable to a calf strain. The joint venture club were impressive in almost causing an upset victory over Melbourne in Round one, but seemed to lack cohesion in the wet conditions at Leichhardt Oval last Saturday against the high flying Sea-Eagles.

With both sides fielding new look halves combinations this season, both sides have curbed their free flowing attacking traits to allow formation and familiarity to form. Parramatta have the edge in attacking brilliance out wide in this game, with noted try scorers Hayne, Tahu, Burt and Grothe itching to see the ball, but halves Finch and Smith need to sort themselves out before they can send the ball wide.

The rumour out of Tiger territory this week is that exciting five-eight Benji Marshall is set to handle the ball this Friday night, after seemingly going into his shell in the opening rounds so far. Marshall can be mesmerising when on song, and he, Brett Hodgson and Robbie Farah have to take on more of the attacking duties tonight if they hope to snare the two competition points.

As both teams are desperate to notch their first win of the season, expect a tight, low scoring battle. With both teams struggling to control the ball last weekend, it will be no surprise to see tonight’s encounter unfold into a dour, forward dominated battle. If this is the case, then the Eels may just have a slight size and skill advantage over their western Sydney rivals.

Will a packed Parramatta Stadium on a Friday night be enough to change the Eels fortunes?

For the punters, take the home side in a 1-12 victory with either Hayne, Tahu, Moodie or Hodgson as first try scorer.
