Warriors survive late Tigers surge

June 29th 2008 05:54
The New Zealand Warriors have held on to record a heart stopping 28-26 victory over a flat Wests Tigers outfit at a packed Leichhardt Oval this afternoon.

With ten seconds remaining, giant winger Taniela Tuiaki crashed over for his third try of the match, with Tigers skipper Brett Hodgson failing with his sideline conversion attempt after the full-time siren which could have sent the match into golden point extra-time.

After a brutal opening, the Warriors posted first points thanks to a probing dart from hooker Ian Henderson, with the lively number nine taking advantage of some sloppy Tigers marker defence to scoot over for an early 6-0 lead.

The visitor’s controversially moved further ahead in the 23rd minute through a Sonny Fai four-pointer; the teenage sensation accepting a highly dubious Grant Rovelli pass to scoot thirty metres down the left-hand touchline to open up an 10-0 lead.

New Zealand further capitalised on their handy field position when Nathan Fien surged through two Tigers goal-line defenders to crash over, with Lance Hohaia’s second conversion pushing the energetic Warriors out to a 16-0 advantage on the half hour.

But the brilliance of Tigers five-eight Benji Marshall finally sparked Wests into action; the livewire pivot mesmerising a number of Warriors defenders on a forty metre charge, before unleashing one of his brilliant flick passes onto a flying Taniela Tuiaki to dot down.

A wonderful sideline conversion from Wests skipper Brett Hodgson closed the gap to ten, with the enigmatic Warriors holding a surprise 16-6 lead at the break.

The Tigers were rewarded for a much more enterprising start to the second half with a spectacular try to hooker Robbie Farah, with Farah accepting the second of two miraculous passes to crash over in the 50th minute.

Another brilliant sideline conversion from Hodgson meant it was game on at 16-12.

Concerted pressure from the home team allowed them to draw level five minutes later thanks to a try to Chris Lawrence, the flashy centre receiving a great pass from Hodgson to carry three Warriors over the line for a crucial try.

But not to be outdone, the Warriors produced their own piece of brilliance from inside their own half, with a great flick pass from Simon Mannering allowing debutant winger Malo Solomona to charge downfield before offloading to Hohaia to complete a scintillating Warriors try.

New Zealand looked to be home and hosed when Sam Rapira crashed over off the back of another Tigers handling error, with Michael Witt’s second conversion in four minutes putting the Warriors up 28-16 inside the final ten minutes.

Tuiaki’s second try with just three minutes remaining ensured a grandstand finish, and when the giant winger crashed over for his hat trick with six seconds remaining, it was all down to Hodgson’s conversion attempt to decide the fate of the game.

Panthers and Broncos share points

June 27th 2008 11:42
The Penrith Panthers and Brisbane Broncos have fought out a heroic, extra-time 12-all draw in front of a small but vocal crowd at a freezing cold CUA Stadium tonight.

With both sides minus key players due to both Origin representation and injury, both sides shared the competition points after a frantic ninety minutes of play.

Both sides had a handful of chances to steal a much needed victory in golden point extra-time with both Brisbane’s Shane Perry and Penrith debutant Lachlan Coote just missing with field-goal attempts.

After a dour opening twenty minutes in the dewy conditions, it took a dazzling piece of play from Penrith’s two ‘Lukes’ that eventually broke the dreary deadlock.

With the Panthers struggling to make any inroads through the resolute Broncos defence, the home side chanced their arm by swinging the ball wide to put Michael Jennings and Luke Rooney away down the sideline, with Rooney placing a pinpoint grubber for Luke Lewis to dive over.

Panthers lock forward Shane Rodney kicked the home side out to a 6-0 advantage thanks to a 31st minute penalty goal, but the Broncos levelled less than a minute later thanks to a simple try to forward Dave Taylor.

Off the back of a Panthers handling error, Broncos hooker Michael Ennis planted a precision grubber through for the towering Broncos backrower, with Ennis’s simple conversion providing a tense 6-all deadlock.

After a fiery opening to the second half, the Panthers moved out to an 8-6 lead courtesy of another Rodney penalty goal, which again was short lived with Brisbane sneaking back in front in the 48th minute.

With the Broncos forward pack starting to dominate their younger rivals, Brisbane skipper Corey Parker complimented another damaging Taylor charge by slamming the ball down, with Ennis’s conversion making it 12-8.

Penrith appeared to have drawn level in the 64th minute when rookie fullback Coote snatched a high ball and passed onto forward Brendan Worth to dive over, but were cruelly denied by video referee Phil Cooley who correctly ruled that Worth was marginally offside in the original kick chase.

But just as it looked like the Broncos would grind out a narrow victory, Panthers flyer Michael Jennings levelled the scores when he produced a scintillating forty metre charge to cross to send the match into golden point extra-time.

Coote missed with a difficult chance at penalty goal from 46 metres out just inside the extra-time period, with both sides quite fairly sharing the points for just the fifth time since golden points inception.

Manly outlast determined Warriors

June 22nd 2008 03:54
The Manly Sea-Eagles have stayed at the top of the premiership table thanks to a scrappy 20-14 victory over the New Zealand Warriors at a sodden Mt Smart Stadium this afternoon.

Manly’s four tries to three victory wasn’t secured until prop Brent Kite crashed over in the 76th minute, with both sides poor ball control sure to be addressed by both coaches during the week.

After a tight opening 15 minutes, it was a barnstorming run from Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei that brought about the opening points, the monster Kiwi winger palming off David Williams and Brett Stewart on a damaging sixty metre charge before dotting down in the corner in his return match.

Also appearing in his first game after a lengthy injury spell, New Zealand pivot Michael Witt converted superbly from the sideline to hand the home side a 6-0 advantage.

The Sea-Eagles replied just three minutes later however thanks to some fancy footwork from fullback Brett Stewart, with the Origin custodian mesmerising three Warriors defenders in an angled cross field charge to get the visitor’s back to 6-4 in the 18th minute.

Running with the aid of a strong breeze, the Sea-Eagles were cruelly denied two further try scoring decisions by video referee Graeme West, allowing the Warriors to take a slight 6-4 lead into the main break.

An energetic start to the second half from Manly allowed them to snatch the lead in the 45th minute, with backrower Glenn Stewart steaming onto a neat Heath L’Estrange offload to barrel his way over beside the posts, with Matt Orford’s conversion pushing the visitor’s out to a 10-6 lead.

In what was warming into an entertaining encounter, the Warriors drew level thanks to a piece of good fortune, with an Ian Henderson grubber kick rebounding off Manly’s Steve Menzies, allowing Simon Mannering to bounce over.

The Warriors chances of recording an upset grew greater when winger Aidan Kirk leapt high over his opposite Williams to dot down, with Witt again missing from the sideline leaving the Warriors clinging to a slender 14-10 advantage heading inside the final 15 minutes.

But in a see-sawing match, Manly hooker Matt Ballin snatched back the lead with a simple dummy-half barge over try close to the posts, with Orford’s conversion from close range handing the Sea-Eagles a 16-14 advantage inside the final eight minutes.

And it was the Warriors ill-discipline that eventually cost them the game, with Manly front-rower Brent Kite wrapping up the match with a late four-pointer.
