Broncos gun down Sharks

July 25th 2008 11:36
The Brisbane Broncos have all but sealed their semi-final position, grinding out a gutsy 18-12 victory over the Cronulla Sharks at a slippery Suncorp Stadium tonight.

The Broncos three tries to two victory was built around a committed defensive attitude, with Brisbane’s forward pack rumbling their way to a hard fought win over a Sharks outfit missing the brilliance of lock Greg Bird.

Brisbane were made to work hard for the two competition points, with both David Stagg (concussion) and Peter Wallace (back) unable to complete the match.

An early penalty goal to Broncos hooker Michael Ennis gave the home side the early ascendency, with Brisbane unlucky not to extend that lead after cutting swathes through the Sharks outside defence inside the opening quarter.

It took until the half hour before the large Suncorp crowd witnessed the first try; Brisbane lock Greg Eastwood placing a precision cross-field chip over for an unmarked Denan Kemp to dive over wide out.

Ennis’s sideline conversion curled just inside the left hand goalpost, allowing the Broncos to go the sheds at half-time with a comfortable 8-0 advantage at the break.

After a dour opening to the second half, the Broncos moved further ahead courtesy of a Sam Thaiday barge over try, with Ennis’s third conversion handing the Broncos a handy 14-0 lead in the 59th minute.

Cronulla fullback Brett Kearney gave the visitors some hope when he finished off a tremendous Sharks raid to finally get the Sharks on the board, with Luke Covell’s conversion from close range making it game on at 14-6 in the 65th minute.

But Eastwood capped off a great game when he crossed for a deserved four-pointer eight minutes form full-time, the bulky backrower crashing over off a sublime Ennis pass for a seemingly unassailable 18-6 lead.

Young Cronulla backrower Grant Millington ensured a grandstand finish when he crossed for a late converted try late in proceedings, but the Broncos held on to cement their place in the NRL top five with a morale boosting victory.

A four-try effort from Brisbane winger Denan Kemp has seen the Broncos record a thrilling 30-26 victory over a spirited Parramatta Eels outfit at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

It was a piece of Darren Lockyer brilliance that got the Broncos home on the hooter; the mercurial five-eighth popping a desperate but precision chip kick out wide for a flying Boyd, with the speedy winger outpacing opposites Eric Grothe and Joel Reddy to a score an 81st minute heart stopper.

While Lockyer will grab all the headlines due to his successful return from a troublesome knee injury, it was the speed and determination of New Zealand bound Kemp that proved the difference, with the spritely winger causing headaches for Grothe every time he received the ball.

It was a much improved performance from last Friday’s bumbling display from the Eels, with representatives Jarryd Hayne and Krisnan Inu striking a particularly lethal combination on the left hand side of the field.

After dominating possession early, the Eels opened the scoring in just the sixth minute, thanks to a piece of individual brilliance from five-eighth Feleti Mateo.

Receiving the ball on the ten metre line, the Tongan utility powered through attempted tackles by Justin Hodges, Michael Ennis and Karmichael Hunt to slam the ball down, with Luke Burt’s conversion providing the perfect 6-0 start.

Parramatta went further ahead just three minutes later courtesy of a flowing backline movement, the ball flying through four players before centre Joel Reddy crashed over for a 10-0 lead.

The Broncos were quick to reply off the back of some concerted pressure, fullback Hunt threading a precision grubber behind Eels winger Grothe for winger Kemp to dot down for his first of four tries.

A 22nd minute penalty goal to Burt extended the lead to 12-4, before Brisbane’s Hodges showed his strength to steamroll Eels Jarryd Hayne and Krisnan Inu to bounce his way over.

Corey Parker closed the gap to 12-10 for the home side when Nathan Hindmarsh was penalised for a 35th minute high shot, before the former NSW Origin backrower bombed a certain try right on the stroke of half-time when he spilt a Brett Finch pass with the line wide open.

Parramatta burst out of the blocks early in the second half thanks to a blockbusting 50-metre break from forward Fuifui Moimoi, the powerhouse prop linking with Brendan Oake who found a flying Burt to race away and score an exhilarating try for an 18-10 advantage.

In what was turning into an exciting game, the Broncos were the next to score through a slick backline movement completed by teenage flanker Kemp, with Parker’s sideline conversion making it 18-16.

A Moimoi high shot allowed Parker to level the scores at 18-all just two minutes later, and the Broncos finally hit the lead in the 65th minute when Hunt fired a perfect twenty metre cut out pass to hand Kemp his hat- trick.

The home team looked to be home and hosed when David Stagg finished off an exhilarating sixty metre movement, but a breathtaking leap by Eels winger Krisnan Inu to score made it 26-22 inside the final seven minutes.

It was game on when Inu completed a piece of Mateo brilliance when he crossed for his second try, but Burt’s failed sideline conversion kept the scores deadlocked at 26-all with just five minutes remaining.

But it came down to the foresight of Lockyer to get his side home in a thriller, the Brisbane playmaker’s instinct and skill securing the Broncos a temporary top of the table position.

Broncos hold off gallant Rabbitohs

April 25th 2008 11:59
The Brisbane Broncos have shown some true ANZAC spirit by gutsing out a courageous 32-18 victory over a spirited South Sydney Rabbitohs outfit at a packed out Suncorp Stadium tonight.

Like Manly last Friday night, the Broncos finished with no fresh reserves due to a handful of serious injuries to the home side, with Justin Hodges, Sam Thaiday, Steve Michaels and Tonie Carroll unable to finish the game.

With the Broncos decimated through injury, the Rabbitohs were able to mount a belated comeback in the final fifteen minutes, but could not reel in the dominant Broncos lead.

The match started in tragic fashion for the Brisbane side, with teenage centre Steve Michaels stretchered off in just the 3rd minute with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

The loss of Michaels had no affect on the Broncos however, with rookie Brisbane winger Denan Kemp finishing off a sweeping backline movement to crash over wide out just two tackles later.

With a glutton of goal-kickers to choose from, Broncos hooker Michael Ennis was given first shot at the kicking duties, but pushed it wide to leave it at 4-0 after five minutes.

Ennis extended the home sides lead in the 15th minute with a penalty goal for a Souths indiscretion, with the Broncos extending their lead seven minutes later when replacement centre Joel Moon slid between two Rabbitohs defenders for a 10-0 lead.

Souths hit back five minutes later in simple fashion; backrower David Fa’alogo bursting through attempted tackles by Broncos Sam Thaiday and Ben Hannant to score a typically barnstorming four-pointer.

In his first game back from injury, Souths hooker Isaac Luke nailed the conversion to make it 10-6 after half an hour.

Despite starting the game from the bench through a bout of the flu, representative centre Justin Hodges put the home side further ahead when he accepted a neat pass off the hip from Tonie Carroll to barge over.

Ennis again hooked his conversion wide, leaving the Broncos with a 14-6 half-time advantage.

The Brisbane crowd rose as one in the 49th minute thanks to a breathtaking seventy metre movement from the home side, Brisbane fullback Darius Boyd showing tremendous speed to fly down the sideline before unselfishly passing inside to Denan Kemp to dot down under the posts.

The game was as good over when Ennis crashed over from dummy-half four minutes later, with the nuggetty hooker’s third goal pushing the lead out to 26-6.

Two late tries to zippy Souths winger Nathan Merritt kept the crowd on the edge of the seats, with Moon’s second try killing off Souths chances.

Brisbane Broncos 32
Tries: Joel Moon 2, Denan Kemp 2, Justin Hodges, Michael Ennis
Goals: Michael Ennis 4

South Sydney Rabbitohs 18
