Sharks outmuscle Warriors

June 14th 2008 11:19
The Cronulla Sharks have secured their third straight victory, grinding out a scrappy 24-8 victory over the New Zealand Warriors at a blustery Toyota Park tonight.

In one of the most error ridden matches seen this season, Cronulla made the most of their limited chances to record a vital four tries to one victory in front of a small band of diehard Sharks fans.

Neither coach would be impressed with their side’s lack of discipline and ball control, with the Sharks completing just 64% of their possession, while the Warriors weren’t much better at 73%.

After a scrappy opening twenty minutes, it was the Sharks that held their composure long enough to post first points through a try to centre David Simmonds.

With both sides failing to control possession, it took a pinpoint grubber kick from Brett Seymour poked in behind the Warriors defence, that allowed Simmonds to win the race to the ball.

But the visitors struck back less than a minute later thanks to yet another Sharks handling error, this time New Zealand centre Jerome Ropati bursting through three Sharks defenders to equalise in the 32nd minute.

It took a magnificent sideline conversion from fullback Lance Hohaia to finally put the Warriors in front, with the spritely custodian booting a further penalty goal three minutes later to hand the Warriors an 8-6 half-time advantage.

The Kimmorley-Simmonds combination nudged the Sharks back into the lead in the 58th minute, with the nuggetty half hoisting it high into the blustery breeze for the high-flying centre to dot down.

Sharp-shooting Shark Luke Covell converted from an easy position to push the home team back into the lead 12-8 heading into the final quarter.

Covell put the match behind doubt when he flew high to claim a Brett Seymour cross-field kick to score in the 69th minute, with a late try to Ben Pomeroy securing the 24-8 victory.

Sharks grind out victory

May 17th 2008 09:17
The Cronulla Sharks have moved into the NRL top 4 after recording a scrappy 13-6 victory over a youthful Brisbane Broncos side at Toyota Park tonight.

After trailing 6-4 at half-time, the Cronulla Sharks got home on the back of a blowing gale behind them, defeating a spirited but mistake riddled Broncos outfit missing seven regular first-graders.

The depleted Brisbane team had most of the running for the first-half but failed to convert pressure into points, with a 77th minute field goal to veteran Sharks half Brett Kimmorley allowing the home side to take the points.

Playing with a howling wind behind their back, the Broncos were able to mount early pressure through a crafty kicking game from hooker Michael Ennis, and finally came away with points through a try to veteran lock Tonie Carroll.

After rolling three previous grubbers through without reward, Ennis finally achieved success on his fourth attempt, threading the ball between two Sharks defenders for Carroll to dot down in the 18th minute.

Ennis had no problems with the conversion attempt, handing the makeshift Broncos side an early 6-0 lead.

After a welt of possession inside the Brisbane red zone, the home side finally got on the board in the 38th minute courtesy of a try to flashy winger Misi Taulapapa, with Luke Covell’s missed conversion leaving it at 6-4 to the visitor’s at the break.

Covell was able to level the scores just after the break however thanks to a 48th minute penalty goal, and the home side were able to extend that lead just four minutes later thanks to a trademark Sharks set move.

Off the back of a scrum just ten metres out, Cronulla five-eighth Bret Seymour scooted left before flicking a precision pass back inside to a flying Brett Kearney, with the dynamic fullback showing great pace to dive over adjacent to the posts.

And after missing a field goal attempt just minutes earlier, Brett Kimmorley made no mistakes with his second shot, getting Cronulla home for a scrappy victory.

The Sharks will now enjoy an eight day break before taking on the Canterbury Bulldogs next Monday night at ANZ Stadium, while the Broncos finally get to put their feet up next week courtesy of their Round 11 bye.

Sharks hold off desperate Rabbitohs

April 14th 2008 11:14
A courageous second half defensive performance by a spirited Cronulla Sharks outfit has seen them register a gritty 12-10 victory at ANZ Stadium tonight, sending the South Sydney Rabbitohs crashing to their fifth consecutive defeat.

It was another heartbreaking loss for the injury riddled Rabbitohs, with the foundation club struggling to crack the impenetrable Sharks line, despite containing a dominant 53% possession advantage.

But as has been the case over the opening five rounds of the competition, it was the strength of Cronulla’s powerful defence that repelled a desperate late Rabbitohs fightback, securing the Sharks a share of the competition lead.

Despite Souths dominating the opening exchanges, the Sharks posted first points off the back of a
Dave Simmonds intercept, with skipper Greg Bird bumping his way over off the next play to dot down for the opening four-pointer.

Sharks sharp-shooter Luke Covell duly converted to hand the Sharks a 6-0 lead after 14 minutes.

With both sides struggling with possession in the greasy conditions, the match deteriorated into an old fashioned slug-fest, with the powerful Souths forwards struggling to dent the hard working Sharks defence.

Cronulla extended their lead in the 32nd minute off the back of some razzle dazzle backline movement, with winger Covell finishing off the ‘hot potato’ movement, dotting down off a pin-point Brett Seymour grubber.

Souths finally got on the board right on the stroke of half-time however, with five-eighth John Sutton showing tremendous determination to power his way over from close range, with Nathan Merritt’s conversion making it 12-6 at the break.

The Rabbitohs had the Sharks under the pump for the opening stages of the second stanza, and were rewarded for their concerted pressure with a 58th minute try to centre Beau Champion, with Merritt’s missed conversion attempt leaving the Sharks clinging to a 12-10 lead after 60 minutes.

But try as they might, the stuttering Rabbitohs attack failed to breach the watertight Sharks defensive line, with Cronulla holding on for a gritty two point victory.

After playing the opening five rounds on the road, the Sharks finally get a chance to run out in front of their fanatical home crowd when they host the Penrith Panthers at the redeveloped Toyota Park next Saturday night, whilst the Rabbitohs will try and secure their first win of the season when they meet the West Tigers at the SCG next Sunday.
