Eels rout Tigers

June 15th 2008 07:45
The Parramatta Eels have continued their mid-season purple patch, recording a 44-6 thrashing of an injury riddled Wests Tigers outfit at a blustery ANZ Stadium today.

The Eels never really looked like losing considering the Tigers lack of healthy forwards, with Parramatta piling on 22 points in each half to move into the top eight for the first time since Round 1.

It took only ten minutes for the Eels to stamp their authority on proceedings through a try to Luke Burt, with Brett Finch popping a precision chip kick for the zippy Eels fullback to score off a favourite Parramatta play.

Burt converted from a simple position to hand the Eels an early 6-0 advantage.

Parramatta were in again just four minutes later thanks to a determined charge from prop Josh Cordoba, the hulking forward crashing through three Tigers defenders to place the ball down for a 12-0 lead.

The Eels pushed out to a 16-0 lead in the 27th minute when winger Taulima Tautai finished off a slick backline movement, with the Eels moving out to a 22-0 half-time lead when hooker Matt Keating completed yet another dazzling Eels movement.

Wests started the second half full of running, with the Tigers posting their first points in the 47th minute; Benji Marshall bamboozling two Eels with some quick footwork before putting centre Chris Lawrence over for a much needed four-pointer.

Brett Hodgson’s sideline conversion gave the Tigers a glimmer of hope at 22-6, hope which was shortly extinguished when Eels centre Krisnan Inu crossed just moments later.

Workaholic Eels backrower Nathan Hindmarsh continued the rout with a second half double, before elusive centre Joel Reddy capped off a great match for Parramatta by scoring right on the full-time siren.

Finch field goal sinks Dragons

May 11th 2008 07:30
A 74th minute Brett Finch field goal has seen the Parramatta Eels complete a thrilling 19-18 victory over a fast finishing St George-Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium this afternoon.

With the Eels holding a slight 18-12 advantage heading into the final ten minutes of play, the crafty Parramatta halfback calmly slotted the crucial one-pointer to hand the Eels back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

In an entertaining encounter full of big hits and enterprising attacking raids, the Eels led from start to finish, relegating the inconsistent Dragons to 13th position after nine rounds of the competition.

It was a spectacular backline movement that allowed the Eels to post the opening four-pointer, with Parramatta fullback Luke Burt chiming in to create an overlap to put robust winger Eric Grothe over in the corner.

Burt capped off the exciting movement with an equally brilliant sideline conversion to hand the Eels a 6-0 lead in just the 8th minute.

The match settled down into an old fashioned arm wrestle, with both sets of froward packs exciting the large Mother’s Day crowd with some big hits and brutal defence.

Then, after having a try denied by video referee Steve Clark less than a minute earlier, the Dragons found themselves even further disappointed when Burt crossed for a converted try off a neat Nathan Hindmarsh pass to make it 12-0 after 34 minutes.

A spectacular try to Dragons winger Chase Stanley finally got the visitor’s on the board, the young flanker the recipient of a trademark Mark Gasnier flick pass to crash over in the corner ,with Jamie Soward’s conversion making it 12-6 at half-time.

After displaying some courageous last gasp, scrambling defence to deny the Dragons two certain four-pointers, the Eels were able to extend their lead in the 54th minute with a well worked team try to centre Jarryd Hayne.

With the Eels halves beginning to find a bit of space, it was a double pump by Finch that put Mateo into a gap, with the skilful number six completing the simple draw and pass to provide Hayne an interrupted run to the line.

However, the Dragons didn’t throw in the towel, and were rewarded in the 60th minute with a converted try to winger Jason Nightingale, the Kiwi representative the recipient of a great long ball from Matt Cooper to run away and score.

But it was Finches field goal that eventually secured the vital two competition points for the Eels, with Cooper rewarded for a solid game with a 79th minute consolation try.

Parramatta Eels 19

A four try, second half burst from an inspired Parramatta Eels has seem them record an entertaining 26-18 victory over the Penrith Panthers at a bitterly cold CUA Stadium tonight.

Despite winning just two games prior to tonight battle of the west, the Eels came back from a 14-6 half-time deficit to record a much needed victory in front of a hostile Penrith crowd.

The win was even more impressive considering that the Eels had all five players backing up from last night’s City v Country match in Wollongong, with Parramatta halves Brett Finch and Feleti Mateo guiding the Eels to a crucial eight point victory.

The Eels were the first to post points through a simple try to Daniel Wagon, the burly veteran waltzing through a huge gap to touchdown under the posts.

Eels fullback Luke Burt converted to notch his 1001st carer point to hand the visitors an early 6-0 advantage.

The Panthers reply was quick but contained a hint of controversy, Panthers skipper Petero Civoniceva finding him brought down inches short of the tryline, before spinning over to plant the ball.

After countless television replays, video referee Graeme West eventually awarded a benefit of the doubt try, with Jarrod Sammut’s conversion levelling the scores after 16 minutes.

Penrith made it back-to-back tries when Tony Puletua crashed through some soft Eels defence, Sammut’s second conversion making it 12-6 after 20 minutes.

A 36th minute Sammut penalty goal saw the visitors go to the sheds with a 14-6 half-time advantage.

Parramatta gave their supporters some hope when Nathan Hindmarsh scored a miraculous try in the 50th minute, the workaholic backrower charging after a Taulima Tautai kick to score a crucial try for the Eels.

Hindmarsh’s try sparked the misfiring Eels into action, five-eighth Mateo finding himself on the end of a brilliant seventy metre movement to touch down wide out for a converted try.

The Panthers crowd burst into a chorus of jeers minutes later when referee Ben Cummins awarded a try rookie Eel Weller Hauraki, with the reserve forward seemingly making a second attempt after being tackled short of the line.

And it was good as game over when Eels centre Joel Reddy finished off another long range effort by a Parramatta team suddenly full of running, with Burt’s third conversion on the hour mark making it 26-14.

A 76th minute try to Panthers centre Michael Jennings gave the home side an outside chance, but Sammut’s missed sideline conversion left the home side an agonising eight points short.

The Eels will try to make it back-to-back victories when they meet an equally struggling St George-Illawarra Dragons outfit at ANZ Stadium next Sunday, while the Panthers meet the Bulldogs at 24 hours earlier at the same venue.
