Souths reclaim Charity Shield

March 1st 2008 11:40
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have reclaimed the annual Charity Shield with an entertaining 24-20 victory over the St George-Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium tonight, with star Souths recruit Craig Wing starring in a successful return.

The talented, former Rabbitohs junior, crossed for the match winning try in the 74th minute, impressing the 25,127 strong crowd with his general leadership and direction.

In an open and exciting mach, St George-Illawarra fought back from an early 12-0 deficit to snatch the lead with 15 minutes remaining, before a determined Wing barrelled between three Dragons defenders to seal the result.

With both teams showing a hint of nerves early, it was a spritely Rabbitohs side that opened the scoring in the 14th minute through an opportunist’s try to centre Yileen Gordon.

After dominating both possession and territory, a pinpoint cross field kick from Rabbitohs half Ben Rogers found winger Germaine Paulson, with the gangly Souths winger able to fly high and bat the ball back to Gordon to score the simplest of tries.

Rookie Souths hooker Isaac Luke converted from wide out to hand the Bunnies a 6-0 lead.

An energetic Rabbitohs were in again just eight minutes later, with a perfectly executed blindside move from Rogers and David Kidwell allowing an unmarked Paulson to score in the corner.

Luke’s swirling sideline conversion attempt just grazed the goalpost, leaving the Rabbitohs with a deserved 10-0 advantage.

A 29th minute penalty goal to the livewire Souths hooker pushed the Rabbitohs out to a handy 12-0 lead, with a rusty St George-Illawarra outfit struggling to contain an up-tempo Souths attack.

The Dragons finally got on the board just four minutes out from half-time owever, with a pinpoint Rangi Chase grubber allowing speedy St George-Illawarra half Jamie Soward to dot down under the posts.

Soward’s timely conversion brought the Dragons back into the contest, with the Rabbitohs going into the break with a 12-6 advantage.

The Dragons returned in the second half breathing fire, and a sweeping movement by the talented St George-Illawarra backline allowed centre Mark Gasnier enough room to barge over in the 45th minute.

Soward’s sideline conversion swung wide, leaving Souths clinging to a slight 12-10 lead.

Gasnier crossed for his second just minutes later off another majestic Chase grubber kick, with Hornby’s sideline conversion putting the Dragons into the lead for the first time, 14-12.

South snatched back the lead however in the 62nd minute, with reserve half Eddie Paea busting through a tiring Dragons line, before linking with flying fullback Fetuli Talanoa who completed a breathtaking 50 metre movement.

But St George-Illawarra weren’t finished, Soward this time showing blistering speed to streak away and score off the back off a Michael Lett bust, with Hornby’s curling sideline conversion nudging the visitors back out to a 20-18 lead inside the final ten minutes.

But Souths star off-season signing sealed the win for the Rabbitohs when he barged over with six minutes remaining, with Luke’s fourth conversion completing an exciting 24-20 victory.

A hamstring strain to centre Nigel Vagana was Souths only injury concern, whilst the Dragons reported a clean bill of health.

The Rabbitohs will now turn their attentions to traditional season opening clash with the Sydney Roosters, whilst the Dragons will attempt to regroup ahead of their round one match against the Wests Tigers.

Souths defeat Manly in a thriller

August 20th 2007 11:12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have kept their semi-final dreams alive by registering a thrilling 24-18 victory over the Manly Sea-Eagles at a rain soaked Telstra Stadium on Monday night.

The Rabbitohs victory was built on the back of a dominant 58% possession flow, with Souths lock Ben Rogers controlling field position with an outstanding second half kicking display.

With matches against the Tigers and Roosters to finish the regular season, South Sydney’s aspirations of appearing in their first semi-final campaign since their 2002 re-instatement look promising.

Manly fullback Brett Stewart opened the scoring for the visitors in just the fourth minute, with the flying custodian chiming onto a precision double pump pass from Michael Monaghan to score beside the posts.

Sea-Eagles centre Jamie Lyon converted to hand the visitors an early 6-0 advantage.

The Rabbitohs hit straight back off the back of a Manly mistake however, with Souths half Jeremy Smith’s cross field bomb allowing centre Yileen Gordon to fly high and score.

Souths five-eighth Joe Williams conversion levelled the scores to 6 all after just eight minutes.

The Sea-Eagles were the next to score off a simple backline play, with winger Chris Hicks wrong footing four Souths defenders to dot down beside the posts. Lyon duly converted to make it 12-6 after 18 minutes.

Manly’s exciting backline clicked into gear from the restart, with zippy winger Michael Robertson flashing down the sideline, before linking with veteran Steve Menzies to finish off a scintillating 65 metre movement.

Lyon’s third conversion extended the visitors lead to 18-6 after 23 minutes.

Souths dominated possession for the remainder of the half, but it was Manly’s rock solid defence that kept the Rabbitohs scoreless. After repelling the Rabbitohs for six consecutive sets, it was the Sea-Eagles that went to the half-time break with a deserved 18-6 lead.

A try to Souths hooker Isaac Luke enabled the Rabbitohs to get back into the match after the break, with the nippy rake beating three Manly defenders in a determined ten metre dummy half scoot to the line.

Williams’s second conversion narrowed the gap to 18-12 after 51 minutes.

Souths made it back to back four pointers from the resulting kick-off, with Williams holding up a perfect short ball for backrower John Sutton to barge over. The nuggetty Souths half’s sideline conversion levelled the scores at 18 all after 55 minutes.

An upset seemed imminent when Rabbitohs winger Fetuli Talanoa dotted down off a majestic Rogers kick, with another Williams sideline conversion pushing Souths out to a 24-18 lead inside the final seven minutes.

Resilient South Sydney defence in the closing stages denied Manly the all important two competition points, enabling the Rabbitohs to sneak into eighth position and keep their semi-final dreams alive.

Souths outlast Cowboys

July 22nd 2007 07:47
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have kept their feint semi-finals aspirations alive, registering a gritty 20-14 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys at Telstra Stadium on Sunday.

In what was a thrilling finish to the match, the Cowboys fought back from an 8-4 half-time deficit, to lead 14-10 midway through the second half, before great team tries to youngsters Isaac Luke and Ben Rogers sealed Souths eighth win of the season.

After an entertaining start to the match, it was the Cowboys that opened the scoring in the 14th minute with prolific try scorer Ashley Graham dotting down.

On the back of repeat sets of six, it was a bullet like, blindside cut out pass from Johnathan Thurston that allowed Graham to crash over. Thurston’s sideline conversion attempt swung wide, but the Cowboys held an early 4-0 ascendency.

Souths hit back in the 23rd minute, with rookie half Eddie Paea slicing through the Cowboys from close range to dot down beside the posts. Nathan Merritt nailed the simple conversion to take a 6-4 lead.

A Merritt penalty goal right on half-time allowed South Sydney to head into the sheds with a handy 8-4 advantage.

The Cowboys started the second half full of running, with the visitors rewarded with a converted try to Matt Bowen in the 44th minute.

Accepting a Thurston pass ten metres out from the Souths line, Bowen propped and accelerated between three Rabbitohs defenders to score in the corner. Thurston converted magnificently from the touchline to edge the Cowboys back in front, 10-8.

Souths struck back with the try of the match in the 56th minute; with a Rabbitohs attacking raid moving through six pairs of hands before hooker Isaac Luke completed a scintillating team try.

Merritt’s conversion from touch sailed wide, but the home side moved out to a 12-10 lead.

It was back to back four pointers for the Bunnies, with a beautiful David Fa’alogo short ball allowing Ben Rogers to race away for a simple 40 metre try. Merritt’s conversion enabled Souths to stretch out to a crucial 18-10 buffer.

A try to Cowboys centre Scott Minto in the 70th minute ensured a grandstand finish, but Merritt sealed the 20-14 victory with a 75th minute penalty goal.

The Rabbitohs now host the Gold Coast Titans next Saturday night at Telstra Stadium, whilst the Cowboys will again travel to Sydney to do battle with the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval next Monday night.
