New Zealand Warriors

New Zealand Warriors

Attack – 8/10
Defence – 8/10
My prediction – 5th

After surprising many with a top four finish in ’07, the New Zealand Warriors will be hoping for an even better showing in 2008. Under new coach Ivan Cleary’s tutelage, the once unpredictable Warriors showcased a newfound maturity and poise, and finally regained some respect after three disappointing seasons.

Courageously led by a tireless Steve Price, the Warriors again possess a talented blend of size and skill, which should see them again compete in semi-final football. However, the season ending knee injury to fullback Wade McKinnon will hamper the Warriors attacking game, as much of last season’s success can be attributed to the robust runs of the dynamic custodian. Only time will tell how the loss of McKinnon will affect the Warriors chances, with many bookmakers already slashing their prices on the Warriors ability to reach the semi-finals.

If the Warriors can rectify their traveling woes, and find a reliable replacement for McKinnon, then there is no reason why the New Zealander’s can’t again challenge for a top four position.

Strengths-

Aside from possessing the biggest forward pack in the competition, the Warriors real strength is their ability and instinct to switch to their exhilarating style of ad-lib, Polynesian attacking football at the drop of a hat. With their size, pace and skill, the Warriors have the ability to produce tries from anywhere on the paddock, and have proven in recent history that they are never dead and buried in tight contests.

Weaknesses-

Despite finishing the season in fourth spot, the Warriors still had trouble winning matches away from Mt Smart Stadium. Seven of their twelve season losses were recorded on the road, with the continuous traveling over the Tasman probably contributing to the New Zealander’s loss of focus midway through the season.

Expect a change in how the Warriors prepare and travel to away matches this season, as coach Cleary identified the amount of traveling as of his team’s main weaknesses last season.

New Zealand Warriors VS North QLD Cowboys @ Mt Smart Stadium, 12pm, 15/04/2007

Having lost their past two matches on the road, the New Zealand Warriors return home to their home ground fortress to meet the table topping North Queensland Cowboys in what shapes to be the match of the round.

The Warriors started the season in superb form, recording impressive back to back victories over the Eels and Broncos before becoming unstuck on the road once again, losing to the Storm and the Sea-Eagles in the past fortnight.

The Cowboys head to Mt Smart Stadium on the back of four straight victories to start the season, but will no doubt wish they had the services of injured key forwards Carl Webb and Luke O’Donnell for this fiery encounter. If the cowboys big men can make decent yardage against the warriors monster pack, than expect the lethal Thurston / Bowen combination to continue their electrifying early season form.

I am expecting the Warriors to return the winners circle in this physical clash, on the basis of the Warriors overall size being too much for the smaller Cowboys unit to contain. The warriors are one side that can match the Cowboys in the ad lib attack department, and look for a big game from a number of Warriors as they push for selection in next Friday’s ANZAC Test in Brisbane.

The darkhorses of this years premiership race, the Warriors have been impressive in disposing of the Eels and Broncos in consecutive weeks.

The New Zealand team posted four converted tries in the opening half against the Eels in Round one, and after a slow start against the Broncos, posted four converted tries in eleven minutes to dispose of the defending premiers.

Their razzle dazzle attacking ability has been complimented by a new sense of discpline and composure in the 2007 Warriors, and it is these qualities that have seen them mould into a formidable unit. They face a stern test this week against the Storm in Melbourne, but ar ebuoyed by the fact that they were the only team to beat the grand finalists at Olympic Park last season.

The form of new fullback Wade McKinnon has been outstanding for the New Zealanders, and if Wiki and Price can getthe side going forward, then look for McKinnon to run through holes created by Swann and Luiaki all night.
