South Sydney Rabbitohs

Attack – 8/10
Defence – 8/10
My prediction – 8th

South Sydney signalled that they were back as a premiership force in 2007, riding a whirlwind of emotion to finish with a finals berth after many lean seasons. Head coach Jason Taylor will be looking on building on last season’s success, and has high hopes that the arrival of new half Craig Wing can catapult his team to a top four finish.

The Rabbitohs proved last year that they are more than capable of mixing it with the big guns of the competition, and if they can learn to create more try scoring opportunities in attack, then there is no reason why the Bunnies can’t secure a home semi-final in ’08.

Strengths-

With only the Storm and Sea-Eagles boasting a better defensive record in ’07, the Rabbitohs defence will again be their strong point. Despite the absence of a noted hard hitter, Souths prefer to work on getting numbers in tackles enabling them to work as a unit in defence. Their pack contains a perfect blend of size, skill and speed, with coach Taylor tipping a big season for rookie hooker Isaac Luke.

Weaknesses-

While much was written about South Sydney’s impressive defensive exploits last season, it was their inability to create attacking chances that cost them in big games. The Rabbitohs are lightening fast in the outside back department, with Merritt, Talanoa and Vagana noted speedsters, but they were unable to show their sublime skills due to a lack of quality ball in ’07. Hopefully the addition of Wing will offer more structure and patience in attack, with the likes of Sutton, Luke and Widders set to capitalise with their ad-lib unpredictability.

Best Team-

1- Fetuli Talanoa
2- Nathan Merritt
3- Nigel Vagana
4- Yileen Gordon
5- Shannon Hegarty
6- Ben Rogers
7- Craig Wing
8- Roy Asotasi
9- Isaac Luke
10- Manase Manoukafoa
11- David Kidwell
12- David Fa’alogo
13- John Sutton

14- Dean Widders
15- Michael Greenfield
16- Scott Geddes
17– Jeremy Smith

The new look Rabbitohs outfit have finally shed their easybeat tag, after posting convincng victories over the Roosters and Eels to open the season.

There is no doubting the fact that the Redfern based club have embarked on a new era of professionalism both on and off the field, with the off season spending spree paying dividends already. New coach Jason Taylor has obviously spent most of the off season concentrating on his sides defensive strategies, with the new look Bunnies having only conceded two tries in the last 160 minutes of football.

The 2007 Rabbitohs backline is oozing with try scoring potential, with Merritt, Peachey and Vagana already at their attacking best. The Bunnies forward pack is also considerably larger, with the addition of Asotasi, Kidwell and Irvine offering both skill and experience.

Look for Vagana and Merritt to try and isolate the Sharks wing of Luke Covell this Saturday, with the Rabbitoh duo posessing a decided pace advatage over both Hannay and the goalkicking winger.
