MEDIA RELEASE - North QLD Cowboys

The NRL has today fined the North Queensland Cowboys $25,000 for breaching interchange rules during their match against Canberra on Saturday night.

The breach occurred in the 60th minute of the match during the interchange of players Justin Smith and David Faiumu, with the Cowboys having 14 players on the field for approximately 20 seconds.

"The rules governing the interchange process are quite clear and clubs should be aware that any breach of these rules will incur a significant penalty," NRL Chief Operating Officer Graham Annesley said today.

"The Cowboys are fortunate that several factors mitigated the breach, including being in possession of the ball at the time and that the players in question were at no stage involved in the play.

"Had the circumstances been different, the loss of competition points would have been a distinct option."

Mr Annesley said the match official accepted the interchange card from the North Queensland player in the belief that they had 12 players on the field.

All interchange officials will be reminded that they must be certain that any player being interchanged has left the field before allowing a replacement player to take the field.

NRL rules state that it remains the club's responsibility to comply with
the interchange rules.

The Cowboys have accepted that it is their responsibility to ensure they have no more than 13 players on the field at any time.

"Clubs must remain vigilant in ensuring the guidelines are strictly adhered to at all times," Mr Annesley said.

"This incident should place all clubs on notice that we will not permit breaches in this area of the game to go unpunished."
