North QLD Cowboys - Shane Tronc
With Carl webb's shocking jaw injury, Shane Tronc took it upon himself to do the wok of two prop forwards, dominating the Cowboys forward stats convincingly. The new forward leader made 35 tackles against the Dragons last Saturday, whilst carting the ball up 15 times for 122 metres gained. Surprisingly, the big Maroon was his teams leading tackler and only forward to make over 100 metres in attack.
Melbourne Storm - Matt King
The giant Storm centre was one of the best on park last Sunday against the giant Warriors team, being a constant threat to the Warriors Lance Hohaia all afternoon. King made 126 quality metres from just 13 hit-ups at Olympic Park last Sunday, and his work largely goes unnoticed due to the brilliance of fellow Storm backs Inglis, Cronk and Slater.
Parramatta Eels - Nathan Hindmarsh
Hindmarsh started the season as he finished last, finishing his first NRL game of the season as the leading Eels stats man for Round 3. The Robertson workhorse was by far the most effective player, making 20 hit-ups for 152 metres, and completing 35 tackles in his sides golden point victory last Friday night.
It is no co-incidence that the stocky backrower's return saw the Eels complete their first victory of the season.
Penrith Panthers - Michael Jennings
Although not having the best defensive game of his short career, the young Panthers centre all but won the game for the western Sydney franchise, scoring two tries with pure pace.
While Peter Wallace was the undoubted hero for Penrith, Jennings display was an unsung contributing factor to the upset win, with his length of the field try in the dying stages boosting him to a match high 218 metres ran.
South Sydney Rabbitohs - Nathan Merritt
The leading try scorer from the 2006 season has started the 2007 season on fire, crossing for two breathtaking tries in the last fortnight against the Eels and Sharks. While Nathan's first try was an easy catch and score in the corner try, his second was a true wingers try.
The skinny winger made an average of 17 metres for his nine hit-ups, belying his supposed lack of size and strength.
St George-Illawarra Dragons - Jason Ryles
The towering Dragons prop forward lead by example against the Cowboys last Saturday, running for a match high 190 metres from his 20 hit-ups, which surprisingly included zero line breaks.
Surprisingly, Ryles also led the Dragons tackle count for the match, making 29 tackles in his 64 minutes played, with his defensive workload somewhat under rated.
Sydney Roosters - Craig Fitzgibbon
The Roosters skipper was his ususal workaholic self against the Sea-Eagles, easily leading the hit-ups (16 for 117 metres gained) and finishing behind only Craig Wing in the tackle count in a well beaten Roosters outfit.
Fitzgibbon once again dominated his Roosters forward counterparts, and if his fellow forwards don't start helping the workaholic backrower out soon, than the gangly representative star may well suffer from burnout before season end.
Wests Tigers - Brett Hodgson
Wests dimunitive fullback had a wow of a game against his old club, running for a game high 201 metres, and remianed a constant threat to the Eels all night. Hodgson constantly supported his mobile pack all night, and his positional play was the main reason that the tigers started each set of six in good field position.
