NRL Judiciary
Jetstar Gold Coast Titans five-eighth Mat Rogers has been unsuccesful in his bid to have his Grade 2 dangerous throw charge downgraded at the NRL judiciary last night, and will miss the Titans next four matches.
The dual international was facing a 3 week suspension due to carry over points from a previous indiscretion, but chose to seek a grading reduction on the lifting tackle on Parramatta's Luke Burt, meaning he would only serve a 1 week suspension.
However, Rogers failed in his bid, and his spot will be taken by Ashley Harrison for this weekend's crucial top of the table clash with the Brisbane Broncos at Skilled Park on Friday night.
Both Canberra's Trevor Thurling and Ben Jones will also miss the Raiders next two matches, as both were found guilty of a grade one lifting tackle on Wests Tigers hooker, Stuart Flanagan.
While Jones took an early guilty plea, Thurling chose to fight the charge but lost, meaning that with his 93 carry-over points he will not return until the Raiders Round 9 match against the Sydney Roosters.
Vatuvei re-signs
Enigmatic New Zealand Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei yesterday agreed to terms on a contract extension, allowing the mammoth winger to stay a Warrior until the end of season 2011.
Curently the NRL's joint leading tryscorer, the 22-year-old winger has played 63 first grade matches for the New Zealand franchise, scoring 35 tries in the process. The 112kg winger has also represented New Zealand in 11 Test matches, and has been one of the Warriors standout performers this season.
Im not interested in playing anywhere else, said Vatuvei.
I love it here with the boys at the Vodafone Warriors. Everyone at the club has done heaps for me and I want to do my best to pay them back.
My team-mates are great to be around. They give me lots of support and so do Ivan (Cleary) and the other coaches.
And in a bizzare twist, the Cronulla Sharks have been boosted by the return of Danny Nutley back to the Shire effective immediatley.
The Sharks are struggling for depth in the forwards, especially considering that backrower Lance Thompson yesterday announced his retirement from the game due to a troublesome knee injury. The Sharks are still coping with the season ending knee injury to backrower Reece Williams, while Paul Gallen and Ben Ross are still serving suspensions.
Nutley was cut by the Sydney Roosters last week to ease their salary cap wos, after the Bondi-based clug snared the high-profile signatures of Mark O'Meley and Willie Mason over the off season.
Nutley returns to Cronulla after having played for the Sharks from 2002 to 2005.
