NRL News Viewpoint - What Rules Should Change?

November 16th 2006 00:54
Have Your Say!

In relation to the previous NRL News Articleabout theNRL Coaches Conference, we thought we would give you the chance to vote on a few hot topics to come out of yesterday's meeting.

1. Should the NRL make it mandatory for all NRL Coaches to be present at the one day NRL Coaches conference? Brisbane Broncos Coach Wayne Bennett failed to attend again this year (has only attended once in the past five years), with his excuse being that he is on a six week holiday. Is this disrespect for the games governing body considering Bennett's respected viewpoint in the game?

2. What current NRL rule would you like changed? Scrap the stripping rule, abolish the double movement rule or even rid the game of 12 interchanges - what would you change??

Cheers,

StephenP

I will start the ball rolling, and say that I beleive the stripping rule should be abolished completely - we don't really need it, and causes too much confusion for the referee as to how many defenders are in a tackle.

And I would like to see the number of interchanges dropped back to 8 from the current 12 - it will help to slow the game down, by crafty players being able to exploit tired defenders.
(Bring back the chip and chase!!)

Just my thoughts,

Thanks for that Jeffro,

I can't agree with you on the stripping rule - there is just too many inconsistencies in referee's ruling for it to continue. With the added pressure of instant video replays, there is even more unnecessary attention focussed on the referees performance, when essentailly the onus is on the ball carrier to maintain their ball security.

Kind of agree with your sentiments towards Wayne Bennett - although he has an exceptionally brilliant football brain. I just wish he would share his intelligent ideas at the right conferences - I don't see the point in him whinging at press conferences (when he attends them) about rule interpretations, if he doesn't bother to turn up to the coaches conferences.

Blow the whistle on grapple tackles. It's still happening. Last year's supposed crackdown was a farce.

Hey rightback,

Have to agree with you on the grapple crackdown - it seemed to dominate the first five or so rounds, but the referees seemed to lose interest in penalisisng as the season went on. The grapple is still prevalent though, and I am not too sure how we can eradicate it.

Got any ideas?

i have to disagree with you stephen P i feel the ball stripping should stay as you saw last night (if you watched it) the try for great britain of a johnathon thurston 1 on 1 strip it can turn into anything after the ball gets stripped.
But something i dont like is the way a player falls of a tackle so another player does a one-on-one and gets a penalty against his side as its classed as a two man tackle because his teammate was in the tackle at some stage.

What do you think?

Hi Caine, and thanks for your thoughts,

The second point that you highlighted is another reason why we don't need the stripping rule - it causes too much confusion for players and referees.

I agree with you that your example is extremely ludicrous - the scond man in cannot always be sure that a hand was laid on the attacker, hence the confusion and dissent topwards the ref.

While the first point you brought up about Thustrons strip is a good one, in all honesty examples similar to this are few and far between. While I agree with the referees ruling of a try, a point for the Lions player actually propelling the ball forward could also be made.

And we are back to the original confusion!!!

Just my thoughts, but thanks for sharing yours.

Cheers,

i know im a bit late but i just have to say get rid of the double movement rule with the exclusion that once the ref calls you held that is the end of it. As a player myself when u get so close to the line and can reach it it's extremely hard to stop yourself.

the only other rule i can think of is when the ref calls held ALOT quicker then normal if the player with the ball decides to lie down 2 metres ooutside his goal line. There is nothing more fastrating then just having lye on him... you cant even hit him with your shoulder n force him back.... ridiculous

would you agree? p.s could you let me know the score in the cowboys v warriors trial match please?
