Panthers and Broncos share points

The Penrith Panthers and Brisbane Broncos have fought out a heroic, extra-time 12-all draw in front of a small but vocal crowd at a freezing cold CUA Stadium tonight.
With both sides minus key players due to both Origin representation and injury, both sides shared the competition points after a frantic ninety minutes of play.
Both sides had a handful of chances to steal a much needed victory in golden point extra-time with both Brisbane’s Shane Perry and Penrith debutant Lachlan Coote just missing with field-goal attempts.
After a dour opening twenty minutes in the dewy conditions, it took a dazzling piece of play from Penrith’s two ‘Lukes’ that eventually broke the dreary deadlock.
With the Panthers struggling to make any inroads through the resolute Broncos defence, the home side chanced their arm by swinging the ball wide to put Michael Jennings and Luke Rooney away down the sideline, with Rooney placing a pinpoint grubber for Luke Lewis to dive over.
Panthers lock forward Shane Rodney kicked the home side out to a 6-0 advantage thanks to a 31st minute penalty goal, but the Broncos levelled less than a minute later thanks to a simple try to forward Dave Taylor.
Off the back of a Panthers handling error, Broncos hooker Michael Ennis planted a precision grubber through for the towering Broncos backrower, with Ennis’s simple conversion providing a tense 6-all deadlock.
After a fiery opening to the second half, the Panthers moved out to an 8-6 lead courtesy of another Rodney penalty goal, which again was short lived with Brisbane sneaking back in front in the 48th minute.
With the Broncos forward pack starting to dominate their younger rivals, Brisbane skipper Corey Parker complimented another damaging Taylor charge by slamming the ball down, with Ennis’s conversion making it 12-8.
Penrith appeared to have drawn level in the 64th minute when rookie fullback Coote snatched a high ball and passed onto forward Brendan Worth to dive over, but were cruelly denied by video referee Phil Cooley who correctly ruled that Worth was marginally offside in the original kick chase.
But just as it looked like the Broncos would grind out a narrow victory, Panthers flyer Michael Jennings levelled the scores when he produced a scintillating forty metre charge to cross to send the match into golden point extra-time.
Coote missed with a difficult chance at penalty goal from 46 metres out just inside the extra-time period, with both sides quite fairly sharing the points for just the fifth time since golden points inception.
