The Penrith Panthers have stormed into the NRL top eight courtesy of a 46-22 thrashing of the New Zealand Warriors at a blustery CUA Stadium this afternoon.

Penrith dominated form start to finish, turning a confident 22-6 half-time advantage into a dazzling eight tries to our victory in front of 9,205 adoring home fans.

It was a great day out for rookie Panthers winger Michael Gordon, scoring two tries and booting seven goals for a personal tally of 22 points.

The Warriors were never in the contest, with silly penalties and poor ball control keeping the visitor’s behind the eight ball for much of the match.

Penrith were able to capitalise on an early mistake from the visiting Warriors, with Panthers winger Michael Gordon slotting an easy penalty goal to make it 2-0 after just three minutes.

The home side extended their lead in the 16th minute courtesy of a freakish piece of luck, with Warriors fullback Lance Hohaia left bamboozled by an innocuous Luke Lewis grubber, allowing Gordon to flash over for a simple four-pointer.

Penrith made it back-to-back tries from the restart, this time Lewis putting prop Frank Pritchard into a yawning gap, allowing the giant Kiwi international to charge over and score, with Gordon’s third goal making it 14-0 after the opening 20 minutes.

With the Panthers holding a dominant 62% possession advantage, the home side chanced their arm with a last tackle blindside option, with the ball travelling through four sets of hands before providing flanker Luke Rooney with a simple run to the corner.

Kicking into a howling wind, Gordon failed with his sideline conversion attempt, but Penrith had all the running at 18-0 after 28 minutes.

After finally getting some possession inside the Panthers red zone, the visitor’s produced points through a simple try to backrower Simon Mannering, the busy utility pouncing on a nifty Nathan Fien grubber kick to claim vital points for the struggling Warriors.

With regular goal-kicker Michael Witt missing through injury, Hohaia duly converted from wide out to make it 18-6 in the 35th minute.

But just as the Warriors were starting to apply some pressure, the home side produced an exhilarating try against the run of play; Pritchard charging downfield after scooping up a loose Warriors kick, before linking with livewire centre Michael Jennings who raced 70 metres to complete a breathtaking length of the field four-pointer.

Gordon was again unable to covert from wide out, to open up a commanding 22-6 half-time buffer.

The ‘Pritchard’ show continued straight after the break, with the rampaging Panthers forward putting the Panthers out to a 28-6 lead when he crossed for his second try in the 45th minute.

And it was game over when the Gordon/Lewis combination produced a second try for the flashy winger, with Penrith all but home and hosed with Gordon’s fifth conversion at 34-6 in the 50th minute.

A further converted try to Trent Waterhouse finally sparked the visitor’s into action, with tries to Mannering, Ian Henderson and Russell Packer giving the Warriors some hope, before Jennings closed out the match with his second four-pointer.

Tigers pounce on understrength Knights

In this afternoon’s other game, the rejuvenated Wests Tigers have recorded an entertaining 38-22 victory over a makeshift Newcastle Knights at Energy Australia Stadium.

Not even a first-half hat trick to Knights five-eight Chris Bailey could get the depleted Knights outfit home, with the return of stars Benji Marshall, Liam Fulton and Robbie Farah helping the visiting Tigers to their fifth win of the season.

The Penrith Panthers have displayed a perfect defensive effort to completely overwhelm a demoralised Canterbury Bulldogs outfit 30-4 at ANZ Stadium tonight.

It was the young Panthers backline that paved the way for the dominant six tries to nil rout, with centre Brad Tighe and winger Michael Gordon cutting the mistake riddled Bulldogs to shreds.

The Bulldogs were rudderless without Kiwi Test representatives Sonny Bill Williams and Ben Roberts unable to back-up, and were unable to build any pressure thanks to a committed defensive effort from a sharp Panthers outfit.

An early Rhys Wesser break allowed the visitors to post first points; the Panthers fullback carving a hole in the Bulldogs central ruck defence before linking with zippy centre Tighe to complete a dazzling four-pointer.

With regular goal kicker Jarrod Sammut relegated to the Jim Beam Cup, it was up to the enthusiastic winger Gordon to convert successfully from the sideline to hand the visitors an early 6-0 advantage.

After the Bulldogs bombed a few chances of their own, Panthers utility Luke Lewis extended the visitors lead when he produced a sensational 30-metre run to score Penrith’s second four-pointer, with Gordon’s second conversion pushing the score out to 12-0 at half-time.

Some poor handling early in the second half was proving costly for the Bulldogs comeback chances, and when Penrith skipper Petero Civoniceva put forward partner Frank Pritchard over for a third converted try, it was good as game over for the misfiring Canterbury outfit.

And it was game over six minutes later when Gordon flashed down the sideline to score a typically scintillating try, with the flashy young flanker converting sensationally from the sideline to make it 24-0 on the hour mark.

A 70-meter intercept provided Tighe with his second try of the night, with Bulldogs winger Matt Utai bumping his way over in the dying minutes for a consolation try.

Canterbury now faces the daunting task of travelling to Skilled Park to take on the Gold Coast Titans next Friday night, while the Panthers will play host to the New Zealand Warriors next Sunday.

Penrith Panthers

Penrith Panthers

Attack – 7/10
Defence – 7/10
My prediction – 16th

As Penrith continue their rebuilding phase, much of the Panthers 2008 season hopes again rest in the hands of a bunch of talented locals. While the signings of Petero Civoniceva and Adam Woolnough should go a long way to rectifying the defensive flaws of ’07, coach Matt Elliott will be hoping that youngsters Jarrod Sammut, Michael Jennings, Geoff Daniela and ex-Raiders half Josh McCrone can guide the Panthers back to the top of the table.

If Penrith are to have any chance of pushing for a finals berth, they must rectify both their attitude and fitness. There were times last season where Penrith looked to be well off the pace in terms of fitness levels, with the Panthers losing a handful of close matches after blowing comfortable leads. Elliott will be hoping that an improved on-field attitude from his player’s will go a long way on improving their paltry eight victories in season ’07. One feels that the Panthers may struggle with depth this season.

Strengths-

Like the Eels, Penrith have a host of younger talent coming through the lower grades, with players like Sammut, Jennings and Michael Gordon all impressing in 2007. The Panthers have a tonne of try scoring potential amongst their outside backs, and they should get plenty of chances to shine given the ad-lib style of attack that the Puletua brothers provide up front.

Penrith will have no problems in scoring tries, but they will have to stiffen their goalline defence if they hope to move up the ladder in season ’08. The additions of Civoniceva and Woolnough should go along way to solving that dilemma, as will the return of fullback Rhys Wesser from a lengthy injury spell.

Weaknesses-

The loss of Craig Gower to French rugby, combined with Peter Wallace’s move to the Broncos, has left a gaping hole in the Panthers halves for season 2008. Former centre Luke Lewis steps into the unfamiliar role of five-eight, while enigmatic half Joe Williams gets first shot at the number seven jersey after two inconsistent years at Souths. The Panthers have seemingly the weakest halves pairing in the competition, with the most troublesome sign for coach Elliott is the lack of backup in the key playmaking positions.

Best Team-

1- Rhys Wesser
2- Luke Rooney
3- Michael Jennings
4- Brad Tighe
5- Michael Gordon
6- Luke Lewis
7- Joe Williams
8- Adam Woolnough
9- Luke Priddis
10- Petero Civoniceva
11- Tony Puletua
12- Frank Pritchard
13- Trent Waterhouse

14- Paul Aiton
15- Frank Puletua
16- Nathan Smith
17– Tim Grant

2008 Gains and Losses –

Now that the season has finished, in this weeks club analysis we will hand out the report cards for each club in season 2006. Just like a school report, each club will be given a grade between A and E, according to their 2006 playing roster, 2006 position as opposed to their 2005 position and how well they overcame setbacks throughout this season. As there is no rugby league until Friday the 14th of October, we will review just 3 clubs each day this week.
