The Cronulla Sharks have secured their third straight victory, grinding out a scrappy 24-8 victory over the New Zealand Warriors at a blustery Toyota Park tonight.
In one of the most error ridden matches seen this season, Cronulla made the most of their limited chances to record a vital four tries to one victory in front of a small band of diehard Sharks fans.
Neither coach would be impressed with their side’s lack of discipline and ball control, with the Sharks completing just 64% of their possession, while the Warriors weren’t much better at 73%.
After a scrappy opening twenty minutes, it was the Sharks that held their composure long enough to post first points through a try to centre David Simmonds.
With both sides failing to control possession, it took a pinpoint grubber kick from Brett Seymour poked in behind the Warriors defence, that allowed Simmonds to win the race to the ball.
But the visitors struck back less than a minute later thanks to yet another Sharks handling error, this time New Zealand centre Jerome Ropati bursting through three Sharks defenders to equalise in the 32nd minute.
It took a magnificent sideline conversion from fullback Lance Hohaia to finally put the Warriors in front, with the spritely custodian booting a further penalty goal three minutes later to hand the Warriors an 8-6 half-time advantage.
The Kimmorley-Simmonds combination nudged the Sharks back into the lead in the 58th minute, with the nuggetty half hoisting it high into the blustery breeze for the high-flying centre to dot down.
Sharp-shooting Shark Luke Covell converted from an easy position to push the home team back into the lead 12-8 heading into the final quarter.
Covell put the match behind doubt when he flew high to claim a Brett Seymour cross-field kick to score in the 69th minute, with a late try to Ben Pomeroy securing the 24-8 victory.
