Souths fined, players axed

April 28th 2008 08:02
MEDIA RELEASE - South Sydney Rabbitohs

South Sydney Rabbitohs

South Sydney's 2008 season has all but flatlined after yet another drama packed day at the clubs Redfern headquarters.

Without a win after the opening seven rounds, the struggling club was one of six clubs today issued with salary cap breaches emenating from the 2007 NRL season.

The fine comes on top of the news that five of the clubs senior players have had disciplinary action taken against them after they were found guilty of breaching their own player's standards guidelines set out in the pre-season.

Co-captain David Kidwell has been stood down from the capataincy for this Sunday's clash with the North Queesland Cowboys, while regular first graders Eddie Paea, Ben Rogers, Fetuli Talanoa and Jaiman Lowe have been dropped for failing to adhere to the player's 'zero breath alcohol limit' at Saturday mornings regeneration session.

Rabbitohs Director of Football Operations Shane Richardson said: “The players set themselves a standard which the club agreed with following last Friday night’s game, and these players didn’t meet these standards.”

“We want to point out that the players didn’t cause any trouble, however as a Club we take these standards very seriously and action has been taken to reflect our stance.

“The coaching staff feel very strongly about this as it goes to the heart of what we’re trying to do here as a Club.”

The club joined the Tigers, Storm, Broncos, Raiders and Bulldogs in receiving fines by the NRL thanks to a 2006 salary cap audit, with the Rabbitohs the hardest hit with a fine of $70,625.

The day of woe has seen coach Jason Taylor name his side a day early in preperation for the Cowboy's clash, with Dean Widders returning from a stint in the VB NSW Cup to play five-eight.

South Sydney's side to face the Cowboys is -

1. Nathan Merritt
