Eels Defeat Roosters In Trial

February 28th 2009 13:28
Parramatta's Jarrad Hayne won the battle of the converted five-eighths with a two-try display in the Eels 30-24 NRL trial victory against the Sydney Roosters at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday night.

Hayne put in his best display yet in the No.6 shirt , crossing the line twice and setting up another as the Eels outmuscled the Roosters to make it three wins from three this pre-season.

The Roosters had their own makeshift five-eighth with Setaimata Sa making his first trial appearance in the No.6 jersey in a largely ineffectual display.

Sa spent most of his time occupying a wide position on the Roosters' right-hand side as former five-eighth and now lock Braith Anasta did most of the second receiver's work in attack.

The Eels didn't look like winners when Roosters pair Sam Perrett and Mitch Aubusson both crossed the line in the opening ten minutes but from that point it was almost all Parramatta.

A try late in the half to Tim Mannah made the scores 10-6 at the break.

The second-half was the Hayne show, with the former NSW winger breaking clear and scoring under the posts two minutes into the second term to give the Eels the lead.

Fijian rising star Sisa Waqa gave the Roosters hope of a fightback when he broke clear to send Aubusson in for his second midway through the term.

But within minutes Hayne had capitalised on a Roosters handling error to double his tally and put the Eels back in front.

Krisnan Inu extended Parramatta's lead to ten shortly afterwards before Hayne sent Luke Burt into the clear to seal the points.

Orange product Ben Jones chimed in with a late intercept try but the Eels were never going to be headed despite Perrett adding his second with the last play of the match.

Eels coach Daniel Anderson said he had been impressed by Hayne's display.

"I thought he was very good tonight," Anderson said.

"I thought he defended very stoutly, he was opportunistic with his try, half-breaks and breaks.

"I thought he kicked okay, you know, there were a lot of positives about his game.

"He'll grow in confidence as he settles. He has got better each game.

"I think he's learning to talk, learning when to inject himself. It's a unique position, a stand-off like him.

"He's exciting and I enjoy watching him.

"There's going to be some errors around him and there's going to be some diamonds around him too, we need him to get the balance so it's steadily weighed in the diamonds."

Anderson added he was pleased to win all of his pre-season matches but urged fans to keep the results in perspective.

"It's solid. Nothing fantastic, but certainly nothing poor," he said.

"That's probably the best thing ... I really can't give you a list of negatives.

"All I've got is positives and actions and behaviours from players that are all positive."

Roosters Defeat Tigers In Trial

February 21st 2009 22:18
Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello showed signs his three years of injury torment are in the past with a starring role in his side's 16-12 Foundation Cup NRL trial victory over the Wests Tigers on Saturday.

Minichiello was a clear stand-out in the wet and greasy conditions at the Sydney Football Stadium, setting up one try and scoring another himself before sitting out the final half hour of play.

The former Test custodian, who has played just 25 games in three years due to spinal injuries, showed glimpses of his best by barging over Tigers halfback Benji Marshall to score in the 51st minute for a 16-6 lead.

Minichiello was also in the thick of the action when he set up a 70m try to Mitchell Pearce in the final minute of the first half.

However, replays showed Pearce grounded the ball well short of the tryline.

But as it is only a trial match, the referee could not send the decision for video review and awarded the try himself.

The Tigers appeared the better team late in the game, but could not convert try scoring opportunities into enough points.

Marshall put second-rower Willie Mataka across the line in the 67th minute to reduce the deficit to four points and set up a thrilling finale.

Taniela Tuiaki almost stole victory in the final seconds after a brilliant long pass from Marshall but the giant Tigers winger was denied a try after a head-high tackle by Ben Jones.

The win came at a cost for one of the Roosters' rising stars as rookie Rohan Ahern was stretchered off in the 32nd minute with a potentially season-ending anterior cruciate ligament knee injury.

Club officials are hopeful it is only a cartilage injury and he'll make a return in four-to-six weeks.

Roosters centre Mitchell Aubusson scored the opening try in the 26th minute after Pearce's cross-field bomb, while fullback Shannon Gallant crossed in the 35th minute for the Tigers off Marshall's grubber.

Roosters coach Brad Fittler was impressed with Minichiello's return from a full pre-season, and for his side bouncing back from last week's deflating 54-6 trial loss to St George Illawarra.

"He never stops surprising me, Mini, he was really good," said Fittler.

"I was sort of worried how he would handle the confrontation of it, it was great.

"I thought he looked confident. There's been a lot of talk about Anthony, I thought he just went out there as a player and did his job."

Tigers coach Tim Sheens was equally buoyed by the development of Marshall in the No.7 jersey.

But Sheens rued three poor refereeing decisions, the first when his player was impeded in the contest for the Roosters' first try, the second when Pearce scored short of the line and finally when Tuiaki was coat-hangered when trying to score.

"Overall if it was a competition game I'd be unhappy because you'd expect the extra officials to get it right," he said.

"We had the chance to win it ... at the end of the day I was reasonably happy considering the conditions which were a bit awkward and we got through without any major injuries."

Dragons Defeat Roosters In Trial

February 15th 2009 13:44
Wayne Bennett's tenure as St George Illawarra coach opened in stunning fashion as the Dragons crushed Sydney Roosters in their first match under the veteran coach.

After 21 years in Brisbane, Bennett's impact looked immediate in a 54-6 belting of the tri-colours at Members Equity Stadium in Perth.

Much-maligned for beating themselves with errors and wasted opportunities, the new-look Dragons instead made Brad Fittler's side pay for a number of gaffes, including knock-ons to start the first two quarters.

The joint venture side led 30-6 at half-time in steamy conditions before an enthusiastic 9,832 crowd, with centre Chase Stanley, back-rower Beau Scott, fullback Brett Morris and winger Michael Lett each scoring a brace of tries.

The writing was on the wall for the Bondi Junction side when prop Frank-Baul-Nuuausala knocked-on from the kick-off and after a quick scrum win, Dragons centre Matt Cooper put winger Michael Webb over in the left corner.

St George Illawarra Dragons

Then Sydney's restart went out on the full and New Zealand international Stanley scored.

The second period saw further tries to Stanley (22) captain Dean Young (34) and Scott (37).

And while new recruit Darius Boyd was denied a try off Wendell Sailor's grubber in the 57th-minute, the Broncos import managed to cross the stripe with 12 minutes to go anyway, after a long break from Ben Creagh.

Lett crossed again in the final minutes to add some extra gloss to the Dragons' scoreline.

Braith Anasta Looks To Stronger Roosters

February 10th 2009 08:15
Braith Anasta says the Sydney Roosters will be a stronger, more experienced team in 2009 after fading out of NRL title contention in the second half of last year.

Brad Fittler's men looked genuine premiership contenders in 2008 but then lost five of their last seven home-and-away games before being bounced out of the finals in straight sets.

Anasta said the players were determined not to make such a timid exit this season.

"At times we looked unreal ... but we fizzled out," he said.

"Mentally we were not strong enough.

"Last year was the first thing we talked about in training, we took it very seriously.

"We have had a motto in each session and that is to finish strong and regardless of what the session is whether it be video, running, weights or whatever.

"We maybe peaked too early but even at the end we showed glimpses in the finals of that early form, but it was our second half of the season that let us down."

Sydney Roosters

Anasta's fine form was one of the key factors in the Roosters return to finals football after a four-year absence and he said the imminent return of former Kangaroos fullback Anthony Minichiello was a massive boost.

Minichiello has been dogged by a serious back problem for the past four years and the complaint cruelled his 2008 campaign.

"Mini is going great, there's been no mishaps, and he's done 90 per cent of everything the rest of us have done," said Anasta.

"If you ask him he would say he is the best shape he has been in for four years."

Minichiello will not face St George Illawarra Dragons in the Roosters' opening trial game of the season in Perth with English recruit Jordan Tansey to make his debut after his surprise switch from Super League champions Leeds Rhinos.

Tansey, who can play centre or fullback, swapped Leeds for Sydney despite failing to nail a place down with the Rhinos.

Anasta was confident the 22-year-old could be a success in the NRL.

"Tansey has got better every week, he has enjoyed it and the guys have been enjoying his company," he said.

"We have only done scrimmage and oppose with him so it is hard to tell exactly where he is at, but I am confident he will do a good job from what I have seen so far."

Saturday's game in Perth will see both sides play with two referees for the first time and Anasta supported the NRL's plan to have two officials on the field.

"I think it's a good move and it will quicken the game up," he said.

"It will be good for the fans, there will hopefully be less mistakes from the referees and more confidence from the players that there are two guys there and less to miss and harder for players to get away with things."

Roosters Stanley Waqa Extends Family

January 15th 2009 09:59
Sydney Roosters Fijian-born forward Stanley Waqa has had a turbulent time off the field in the past few months.

The giant prop has seen the birth of his second child William, one-month old today, and married his partner in October at a ceremony with family and friends in Sydney.

The 20-year-old already has a 17-month-old daughter, Trish, and is ecstatic at the birth of his second child.

Waqa, who is recovering from a bruised AC joint after a training incident, said he is enjoying life more than ever and was glad to be closer to his family after they moved into their new home in Randwick.

Roosters Preseason Injury Report

January 14th 2009 09:56
Sydney Roosters physiotherapist Travis Touma has assessed all the players upon their return to training and there is some very good news.

Many of the Roosters representative players have had off-season operations and all their recoveries are progressing well by all reports.

Craig Fitzgibbon is seven weeks post-operation after ankle and elbow surgery. Fitzy is set to return to the training paddock next week in preparation for his twelfth season in first grade.

New Zealand World Cup winner Sam Perrett is two months post-operation after right shoulder surgery and is back at training with the NRL squad. At this stage he will most likely be available for selection in the first trial against the St George Illawarra Dragons in Perth.

Roosters Preseason Injury Report

Fellow countrymen Sia Soliola and Setaimata Sa have joined Perrett and the squad at Kippax Lake after both players spent the past two months recovering from surgery on right shoulder injuries after missing out on the World Cup final. Both should be available for selection by the second trial.

Roosters forward Lopini Paea has returned to pre-season training this week after he completed two months of rehabilitation on a right shoulder injury that was operated on after Tonga’s run at the World Cup concluded. His successful recovery gives him a chance of being fit for the first trial in mid-February.

Last seasons new recruits, Mark O’Meley and Willie Mason, are both recovering well after having off-season surgery.

O’Meley is three months post-operation on his left wrist and has returned to full contact training this week in a bid to be fit for his home trial at the Central Coast.

Mason, who tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Medial Ligament in the Roosters win over the Dragons in September last year, is currently undergoing an intense rehabilitation program.

The giant forward has added almost seven kilograms to his frame in the past month and will continue straight line running and weights but is still in no contact training. He is almost five months post-operation on his right knee but a return date has not been specified.

Roosters up and coming back rower Anthony Cherrington is still getting about on crutches and sporting a fibreglass cast around his ankle to protect a stress fracture in his foot. The 20-year-old Kiwi is unlikely to return for the opening match but is working towards a return by round five.

The Sydney Roosters have cemented their spot at the top of the Telstra premiership thanks to a comprehensive 32-12 shut-out of an injury riddled Penrith Panthers at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight.

It was a horror night for the Panther’s, the visitor’s finishing the match with an empty bench due to serious injuries to Luke Priddis (knee), Michael Jennings (ankle), Tony Puletua (ribs) and Josh Bateman (pectoral), cruelling their semi-final chances.

The Roosters never really broke stride in their six tries to two victory, with the communication between halves Braith Anasta and Mitchell Pearce causing constant headaches for the tired Panthers defence.

Penrith burst out of the blocks, opening the scoring in just the third minute through a simple barge over try to centre Brad Tighe, the zippy three-quarter showing tremendous strength to burrow his way through four startled Roosters defenders.

The home side were quick to respond, hooker James Aubusson ducking between Panthers Petero Civoniceva and Tony Puletua to dive over, with Craig Fitzgibbon’s conversion making it 6-4 after 11 minutes.

The Panthers drew level in the 27th minute thanks to a penalty goal to Shane Rodney, the utility forward taking over the goal-kicking due to an ankle injury to Michael Jennings.

Penrith’s injury woes became even deeper in just the next set, with interchange forward Josh Bateman becoming the third Panther in the dressing room after suffering a shoulder injury attempting a tackle on Mark O’Meley.

O’Meley rubbed the salt even further into the visitor’s wound when he barged over for a rare four-pointer with, the Roosters moving out to a 16-6 lead when fullback Anthony Minichiello finishing off a sublime backline movement just moments before the half-time break.

Staring down the barrel of a 6-16 half-time deficit, it took a brilliant cross-field kick from Luke Lewis for Luke Rooney to dot down wide out, with Rodney’s sideline conversion making it 16-12 to the home side at the break.

After being denied a try by video referee Bill Harrigan straight after the resumption, the Roosters made sure of it only moments later when Braith Anasta plucked a Mitchell Pearce bomb out of Rhys Wesser’s hands to dot down for a spectacular try.

And given the Panther’s injury crisis, the game was as good as over when Willie Mason sprinted forty metres downfield after charging down a Lewis clearing kick, before unloading to Brent Grose for a 26-12 lead.

A late try to winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall completed the twenty point victory.

The Sydney Roosters have achieved their fourth straight victory and a share of the competition lead thanks to a gritty 19-10 win over a tenacious Wests Tigers outfit at a sodden Sydney Football Stadium tonight.

The incessant rain in Sydney was always going to mean a tight, rugged match, with the larger Roosters forward pack dominating their more mobile rivals, much to the delight of the 15,204 loyal Roosters crowd who braved the chilly, wet conditions.

Wests were finding plenty of holes on the outside edges early, but their poor ball control not only cruelled any point scoring opportunities, but also their energy in the extra defensive workload.

It took until the 27th minute before the Roosters opened the scoring through a dubious try to winger Amos Roberts, with the veteran winger accepting a suspect pass from Sia Soliola to complete a slick backline movement.

Sydney skipper Craig Fitzgibbon converted magnificently in the driving rain from the sideline to push the home side out to a crucial 6-0 lead given the inclement conditions.

The brilliance of Anthony Tupou allowed Sydney to push further ahead just moments later; the Origin backrower attracting four Tigers defenders before twisting and offloading back to a flying Mitchell Aubusson to score, with Fitzgibbon’s simple conversion making it 12-0 after 33 minutes.

Sydney looked to have extended their lead even further just three minutes later thanks to yet another Tigers handling error, however video referee Chris Ward denied a try to Mitchell Pearce, leaving the Roosters with a handy 12-0 half-time advantage.

Two pieces of individual brilliance from Robbie Farah allowed the Tigers to get back into the game just after the break, with the talented Wests hooker first putting the visitors in decent attacking position after craftily finding touch from a 20 metre tap restart.

And just three tackles off the back of the scrum restart, Farah spotted a small gap up the middle of the ruck, crashing through three Roosters defenders to provide the Tigers with their first points of the night.

Tigers skipper Brett Hodgson made neat work of the simple conversion, to make it game on at 12-6 in the 47th minute.

And just as Wests were starting to mount some concerted pressure, it was the man Aubusson that produced a scintillating, sixty metre solo effort to break the visitor’s momentum.

Under the direction of coach Tim Sheens on the sideline, Benji Marshall attempted to pop an early kick over the top for winger Taniela Tuiaki, which ricocheted into the arms of a flying Aubusson who proceeded to swat away three Wests defenders in a barnstorming run to the line.

Tuiaki did eventually get his chance to get on the outside of the Roosters defence, charging downfield off a neat inside ball from Dean Collis, before finally being pulled down just inches short of the line after a sixty metre charge.

A Farah grubber off the next play looked to have provided a four pointer to rookie winger Beau Ryan; however video referee Ward miraculously found the slightest of knock ons to thwart the Tigers come back chances.

Tuiaki made no mistakes moments later when he gave his side a sniff with a typically powerhouse four-pointer, but Hodgson’s sideline conversion attempt in monsoonal conditions just splayed wide, leaving the Roosters clinging to an 18-10 advantage inside the final ten minutes.

However, the rain and the determined Roosters defence prevented the Tigers from a last gasp victory, with a late field goal to Sydney half Pearce completing the scoring for the night.

The Sydney Roosters have ended the New Zealand Warriors undefeated run at Mt Smart Stadium this afternoon, recording a decisive 38-12 victory over a fumbling home side.

Sydney blew the Warriors off the park in the opening ten minutes of the match, scoring three tries for a 14-0 lead to and the visitor’s their third straight victory.

It was another clinical display from the highly-skilled Sydney team, who were superbly led by two-try hero Braith Anasta and halves partner Mitchell Pearce, with international winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall the recipient of a crafty kicking game, scoring three tries.

The visitor’s took only three minutes to post four points off the back of repeat sets, with a flying Kenny-Dowall climbing high to claim a Mitchell Pearce cross-field kick to dot down for his sixth try of the season.

With regular skipper and goal-kicker Craig Fitzgibbon unable to backup after his midweek Origin commitments, new skipper Anasta missed with his sideline conversion attempt to leave it at 4-0 after as many minutes.

Kenny-Dowall was in again just two minutes later as the Roosters chose to run it on the last tackle; centre Mitchell Aubusson sent on a charge downfield off the back of a sublime, around the corner pass from Willie Mason, with Aubusson finding Kenny-Dowall to make it 8-0 after just six minutes.

The Roosters made it three tries inside the opening ten minutes when Anasta claimed a pinpoint Pearce chip kick to score, with the skilful five-eight this time converting from an easier position for a 14-0 lead in just the 11th minute.

In what was turning into an entertaining, free-flowing match, the home side opened their account through with winger Aiden Kirk’s first career try.

Jumping straight on the counter attack after a lost ball from another Kenny-Dowall linebreak, the Warriors shifted it through the hands to allow the rookie winger to make it 14-4 after 17 minutes.

But a Warriors mistake from the restart allowed the Roosters to again extend their lead, this time Sia Soliola knocking back a Pearce bomb for backrower Setaimata Sa to score a rare four-pointer.

Having found his kicking radar with his earlier shot, Anasta converted from wide out to make it 20-4 after 22 minutes.

With the Warriors enjoying a handy run of possession, the home side were able to extend their lead in the 35th minute thanks to a determined, dummy-half scoot from hooker Ian Henderson, with Hohaia’s conversion getting the home side back into the match at 20-10.

The Warriors completed a fiery first-half with a Hohaia penalty goal after the half-time siren, with the visitor’s heading to the break with a deserved 20-12 advantage.

After defending their line for the opening stages of the second half, the visitor’s pushed further ahead when Anasta dummied past Brent Tate to score his second try, with the five-eighth also turning in a handy goal-kicking performance to make it 26-12 in the 53rd minute.

A 90-metre intercept try to Kenny-Dowall sealed the Warriors fate however, with the flashy winger scoring a 67th minute hat-trick to end the deliver the Warriors back-to-back losses.

Roosters pluck listless Eels

May 16th 2008 11:40
An undermanned Sydney Roosters outfit have piled on five second half tries to completely overwhelm a shell-shocked Parramatta Eels side 32-12 at a bitterly cold Parramatta Stadium tonight.

Returning from the half-time break trailing 8-6, the spirited Roosters piled on three tries in 12 minutes straight after the break, to demoralise the vocal Eels home crowd of 16, 211.

Despite a handful of questionable decisions, the Eels were their own worst enemies, failing to convert a weight of first half possession into points, with Parramatta now having lost their past three games in front of their loyal home crowd.

After a mistake riddled start by both teams, it was the Eels that posted first points through a simple try to Eric Grothe thanks to a great piece of vision by halfback Brett Finch.

With the Roosters defensive line extremely compressed from the outset, it was a sublime 20-metre cut out pass from Finch that found an unmarked Grothe, with the big winger charging over untouched for his sixth try of the year.

It took the brilliance of Sydney’s Braith Anasta to get the Roosters firing, the talented pivot producing two big right foot steps to leave three Eels defenders grasping at air to dive over for a 26th minute four-pointer.

With regular goal kicker Craig Fitzgibbon away on Origin duty, fullback Amos Roberts duly converted to level the scores at 6-all.

Parramatta fullback Luke Burt allowed his side to go into the sheds with an 8-6 half-time lead thanks to a 43-metre penalty goal just thirty seconds from the siren, with both coaches addressing their player’s poor completion rates at the break.

Whatever Roosters coach Brad Fittler said to his charges at half-time had the desired effect, with New Zealand centre Setaimata Sa sliding over the line to put his team in front for the first time in the match.

Off the back of a booming 40/20 kick from Roosters half Mitchell Pearce, the visitor’s were able to move further ahead through another replica four-pointer to a rampaging Sa, the mammoth Kiwi centre’s second try in the space three minutes.

It was a piece of Pearce/Anasta magic that looked to have got the Roosters home and hosed; the young halfback potting a pinpoint chip kick over for Anasta to claim one-handed, and spin out of a Burt tackle to score.

Roberts’ third conversion of the night made it 22-8 after 58 minutes, and it looked like a tough road back for a misfiring Eels side.

And it was game-over for the home side when Sydney centre Brent Grose completed an amazing aerial display to dot down inches inside the sideline for the visitor’s fifth try of the night.

The Eels were able to cross for a consolation try to Joel Reddy, before Pearce put the icing on the cake with a bizarre 78th minute intercept try.

Parramatta can put their feet up next week courtesy of their Round 11 bye, while the Roosters face a tough road trip when they travel to Mt Smart Stadium to take on the New Zealand Warriors next Sunday.

Roosters beat troubled Raiders

May 10th 2008 09:35
The Sydney Roosters have arrested a two game losing streak with a dominant 30-4 victory over a mistake riddled Canberra Raiders at the Sydney Football Stadium this evening.

Sydney’s five tries to one victory was built around a dominant first half performance, with the Bondi-based side running in four tries inside the opening thirty minutes to record their fifth victory of the season.

Canberra were their own worst enemies, combining simple handling errors inside their own half with a whopping 41 missed tackles in a performance that would have Raiders coach Neil Henry looking to make changes ahead of their Round 10 clash with the Rabbitohs.

Roosters centre Mitchell Aubusson opened the scoring in the 8th minute thanks to a piece of brilliance from winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall; the Roosters winger climbing high above two Raiders defenders to claim a Mitchell Pearce bomb before offloading to Aubusson to score.

Sydney skipper Craig Fitzgibbon duly converted from right in front to hand the home side an early 6-0 advantage.

With Sydney enjoying a weight of possession inside the Raiders red zone, Roosters five-eighth Braith Anasta extended the home sides lead when he pounced over from close range to make it 10-0 after 17 minutes.

Despite backing up from last night’s Test match, Roosters prop Willie Mason produced a powerful charge to put Aubusson over for his second try of the half, with Fitzgibbon’s second goal pushing Sydney out to a 16-0 lead inside the opening half hour.

Sydney’s kicking game was causing all sorts of problems for Raiders fullback Bronx Goodwin, with Roosters halves Anasta and Mitchell Pearce tormenting the youngster with an aerial blitzkrieg.

And it was 34th minute Anasta bomb that enabled the Roosters to cement a 22-0 half-time lead, this time the Raiders custodian spilling the ball straight into the waiting arms of Setaimata Sa, allowing the powerful centre to score the Roosters fourth try of the half.

Whatever Raiders coach Neil Henry said to his chargers at half-time obviously hit the right note, elusive centre Joel Monaghan bursting over from close range to get the visitors on the board.

The game was as good as over when Fitzgibbon slotted over a 66th minute penalty goal, with firebrand prop Mark O’Meley crossing for a rare try at the death.

Sydney now takes on the Parramatta Eels next Friday night at Parramatta Stadium, whilst the Raiders play host to the South Sydney Rabbitohs next Monday night.

Roosters sink boot into Bulldogs

April 4th 2008 11:15
The Sydney Roosters have won tonight’s inner Sydney war, blazing their way to a 40-12 thrashing of a shell-shocked Canterbury Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.

Led courageously by man of the moment Willie Mason, the star studded Roosters side piled on seven tries to silence the 36,526-strong vocal, pro-Bulldogs crowd.

While two-try hero Mason will grab all the post-match headlines, it was Roosters halves Braith Anasta and Mitchell Pearce that stole the show, with the unconventional halves pairing laying the foundations for the crushing win.

After dominating the media all week, it was fitting that Mason opened the scoring in the 19th minute, the towering backrower accepting a fine short ball off the shoulder of Fitzgibbon to charge over in front of a baying Bulldogs mob.

Fitzgibbon had no problems with the conversion to hand the visitors a deserved 6-0 lead.

An Amos Roberts try in the 29th minute extended the visitors lead, with the flashy winger claiming an Anasta bomb spilt by opposite Heka Nenai, strolling over untouched for the Roosters second converted try.

It was Anasta’s boot that provided halves partner Pearce with their team’s third try just three minutes later, with the stocky five-eight popping over a pinpoint chip-kick for Pearce to score beside the posts.

Fitzgibbon’s conversion, plus a 35th minute penalty goal allowed the Roosters to go to the sheds with a commanding 20-0 lead.

The match was as good as over when Mason crashed over for his second four pointer early in the second half, with Fitzgibbon’s fifth goal pushing the Roosters out to a 26-0 lead and the vital two competition points.

Further tries to Fitzgibbon, Setaimata Sa and Shaun Kenny-Dowall completed the Roosters scoring for the night, with tries to the Bulldogs Ben Roberts and Corey Hughes adding some respectability.

Sydney now travel to the foot of the mountains next Saturday night to do battle with the Penrith Panthers, whilst the Bulldogs will have nine days to prepare for their travel to Mt Smart Stadium to face off against the New Zealand Warriors.

Sydney Roosters

Sydney Roosters

Attack – 8/10
Defence – 8/10
My prediction – 7th

Everything is pointing to a stellar season for the Sydney Roosters in the games Centenary season, with the tri-colours set to unleash one of their strongest line-ups in recent seasons. Roosters coach Brad Fittler heads into his second year of coaching with a dream playing roster at his disposal, with fullback Anthony Minichiello returning after a lengthy injury layoff coupled with the acquisition of representative forwards, O’Meley and Mason.

The Roosters have a host of talent right across the park, and if the halves pairing of Anasta and Pearce can fire, then expect to see Roberts, Perrett and Soliola crossing for plenty of tries. If the Roosters can remain relatively injury free, then a top eight position beckons.

Strengths-

After an injury plagued ’07, coach Fittler finally has a full compliment of fit and healthy players to choose from. The Roosters pack is full of intimidation and skill, with Fitzgibbon, O’Meley, Nutley and Myles providing the grunt, and Mason, Tupou and Setaimata Sa providing the flair. With speed to burn in the outside backs, the Roosters of ’08 look to be the real deal.

Weaknesses-

Coach Fittler’s biggest hurdle in his second season will be attempting to get a team full of champions to play as a champion team. The Roosters have always boasted a wealth of talented individuals, but for some reason, have never quite lived up to expectation. Fittler will find himself under immense pressure if his star studded team fails to fire, and probably his toughest challenge will be to keep the various egos in the team in check.

Best Team-

Fittler offers to help NSW

January 15th 2008 00:05
State of Origin Blues

New South Wales' chances of wrenching back the State of Origin trophy from the Queenslanders has been given a boost with news that former NSW and Australia captain Brad Fittler has offered NSW coach Craig Bellamy a helping hand.

'Freddy' joins a stellar team already consisting of legend Andrew Johns as an assistant coach and former prop Steve Roach as a co-manager to mastermind Queensland's downfall in the upcoming series.

Brad Fittler

Fittler said: "There is nothing official but Craig did toss it up. IIt all depends on my commitments but if there's anything I can do then I'd love to help out."

The 2008 NRL season will be a busy one for the retired Rugby League great as he looks to coaching the Sydney Roosters for a full season for the very first time.

Queensland has been the more successful side in State of Origin over the last 10 years with 6 overall wins compared with the Blues' 4.

Willie Mason joins Sydney Roosters

November 15th 2007 07:00
Willie Mason

League bad boy Willie Mason has ended weeks of speculation concerning his future by putting pen to paper on a lucrative three-year deal worth more than $1 million with the Sydney Roosters today.

The deal was made possible under the salary cap after the Roosters offloaded lock Ashley Harrison to Gold Coast to free up $220,000 last week.

Sydney Roosters

After a three way battle with Manly and the Dragons including a last ditch offer from Cronulla, the Roosters have emerged victorious to sign the Australian forward after a falling out with the Bulldogs ended his tenure at the Belmore club.

A clearly relieved Mason said that a decision wasn't made until this morning because he had been waiting on Cronulla's offer, and that his close relationship with Ricky Stuart meant they had come close to snaring him.

In the end, the decision that prompted him to join the Roosters was the fact he and his partner both live in the eastern suburbs.

Willie Mason

"I think I've made the right decision. Everything just seemed right." he said.

"The Roosters have a strong playing roster and a great coach in Freddy. I’m just looking forward to being a part of it and getting on with the job of winning football games."

As well as joining former team mates Mark O'Meley, Nate Myles and Braith Anasta in red, white and blue, Mason will combine with names like Fitzgibbon, Tupou, Paea, O’Meley, Nutley, Shillington and Myles to form one of the most formidable packs in the competition.

The big forward is a veteran of 23 tests and 10 origin games for NSW.

Roosters, Sharks or Dragons for Mason?

November 10th 2007 06:30
Willie Mason
Who will Willie Mason be playing for next season?

Canterbury Bulldogs have given want-away bad boy Willie Mason permission to negotiate with other clubs after a crisis meeting on Wednesday.

The influential forward has since been the subject of a tug-of-war between the Roosters and the Sharks but the Dragons have emerged out of nowhere to be amongst one of the favourites to sign the Australian international. English club Wigan have also expressed their interest in his services.

Sydney Roosters in the affluent Eastern Suburbs remain favourites to sign Mason with officials at the Bondi Junction club, including coach Brad Fittler, scratching their heads to find a palatable deal for the club and player.

Sydney Roosters
The frontrunners to sign bad boy Willie Mason?

However, their efforts have been thwarted by their inability to find a club for prop David Shillington - the player most likely to make way for Mason's arrival.

Amongst other things is the matter of salary cap issues and whether the player, who is reportedly on $450,000 a season, would be willing to take a pay cut.

Taking a pay cut seems to be the least of Mason's worries when he briefly spoke to the media today.

"I don't think there's been a player that has come off contract a week before they start training, so it's a weird situation and I know that everybody has now got their roster settled and it's going to be hard to squeeze a player like myself into their roster," Mason said.

"So I know I'm going to have to take a pay cut and I'm willing to do that."
said Mason.

Expect an announcement to be made sometime next week.

Tigers hold out Raiders

July 1st 2007 05:59
The Wests Tigers arrested a two game losing streak by completing a gutsy 22-16 victory over the Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium on Sunday.

In front of a brave home crowd of 12,598 on a bitterly cold Canberra afternoon, it was the visitors that secured an entertaining four tries to three victory on the back of a dominant defensive display.

The Raiders burst out of the blocks, with a Todd Carney draw and pass putting rookie winger David Milne over in the corner inside the opening two minutes. Carney’s conversion attempt swung wide, but Canberra held a dream 4-0 start.

A beautiful set piece allowed the Tigers to level the scores in the 13th minute, with the creativity of Dene Halatau and Robbie Farah putting Kiwi centre Paul Whatuira in wide out. Farah’s s conversion shot screwed well wide leaving it all tied up at four all after a quarter of an hour.

Wests made it back to back tries off the restart, with some individual brilliance from Farah being finished off by halves partner John Morris. Farah made no mistakes this time to push the Tigers out to a surprise 10-4 lead.

The rest of the half saw much some magnificent end to end football, with determined West Tigers defence thwarting any chance the home side had of levelling the score. As the rain started to fall on a freezing Canberra afternoon, it was the Tigers that went to the break with a handy 10-4 advantage.

Teenage Tigers sensation Chris Lawrence crossed for his ninth try of the season just after the break, with the flying utility pouncing on a precision Farah grubber to score. Farah converted from right in front to push the visitors out to a commending 16-4 lead.

An innocuous Carney grubber kick allowed the Raiders to claw their way back into the contest, with Milne crossing for his second try after the Tigers failed to adequately clean up. Carney nailed the pressure conversion to close the gap to 16-10 after 48 minutes.

A bullocking charge by Raiders backrower Dane Tilse saw the home side post back to back tries, with a simple Carney conversion levelling the scores at 16 all.

Whatuira continued the second half try scoring spree when he crossed for his second in the 55th minute, nudging the Tigers out to a 20-16 lead.

The Tigers extended their lead to 22-16 in the 72nd minute through a dubious penalty for a Lincoln Withers high shot, and the Tigers looked to be home and hosed with only seven minutes remaining.

The Raiders tried hard to level the scores in the dying moments, but the under strength Tigers held firm to record their fifth victory on the road for season ’07.

The Canberra Raiders will travel to WIN Stadium next Sunday to battle with the St George-Illawarra Dragons, whilst the Tigers play host to the Penrith Panthers next Friday night.

Roosters snatch thrilling victory

June 16th 2007 11:56
The Sydney Roosters recorded a thrilling last minute 24-20 victory over an ill-disciplined Penrith Panthers on Saturday night at a bitterly cold CUA Stadium.

With thirty seconds left to play, Sydney Roosters rookie half Mitchell Pearce swooped on a Panthers loose ball and raced seventy metres to score a miracle match winning try.

After both sides had a try disallowed by video referee Pat Reynolds inside the opening five minutes of play, it was the home side that finally opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

Panthers centre Michael Jennings latched onto a misplaced grubber from the Roosters Pearce, with the flashy Penrith number three racing eighty metres to score in the corner. Michael Gordon’s sideline conversion sailed wide, but the Panthers took an early 4-0 advantage.

The Panthers were in again in the 24th minute through a brilliant try to lock Nathan Smith. Penrith skipper Craig Gower popped an audacious little chip over the Roosters defence, with backrower Frank Pritchard showing surprising pace and skill to catch and pass onto Smith to score. This time Gordon made no mistakes with the conversion to push the home side out to a 10-0 lead.

Sydney finally got onto the board in the 32nd minute through a great individual effort by Roosters winger Sam Perrett. Climbing high for a Pearce cross field bomb, Perrett was able to land fly high above the pack and plant the ball despite the attention of the Panthers defenders. Roosters skipper Craig Fitzgibbon nailed a sensational sideline conversion to leave the visitors down 10-6 at the break.

Penrith extended their lead straight after the break, with a simple barge over try to interchange forward Junior Moors. Gordon continued a shocking night with the boot, missing another relatively easy conversion to leave the Panthers 14-6 ahead.

The Roosters hit back was immediate, with a Moors mistake from the kick off putting the visitors straight back on the attack. A grubber kick by Pearce on an early tackle caught the Panthers defence napping, with replacement five-eighth Setaimata Sa diving on the spoils. Fitzgibbon duly converted to get the visitors to within two points.

Another Penrith mistake allowed Sydney to take the lead in the 55th minute, with elusive fullback Amos Roberts slicing through some soft Panthers defence to dive over under the posts. Fitzgibbon’s third conversion of the night gave the visitors a surprise 18-12 lead.

In what was proving to be a see-sawing battle, Penrith prop Joel Clinton crashed over beside the posts in the 64th minute, with Gordon’s conversion sneaking the Panthers back out to a 20-18 lead.

But in what was a miracle end to an entertaining match, it was Pearce that scooped up a loose ball and sprinted seventy metres to score under the posts to snatch an unlikely Roosters victory. Fitzgibbon’s fourth conversion completed the shock 24-20 away victory.

The Penrith Panthers now travel to Mt Smart Stadium next Friday night to do battle with the New Zealand Warriors, while the Sydney Roosters will tussle with the Parramatta Eels at Aussie Stadium next Saturday night.

A spirited team effort from the Sydney Roosters saw them record just their second victory of the season, registering a 24-18 victory over a fast finishing Gold Coast Titans outfit at Aussie Stadium on Sunday.

A small Mother’s Day crowd was on hand to witness a determined Sydney Roosters team post just their second win of season’07, with a flat first half effort costing the Gold Coast Titans the two premiership points.

Seemingly suffering from the Monday night football curse, the Titans failed to capitalise on some promising attacking opportunities in the first half, with the Gold Coast side struggling for cohesion in the halves for much of the match.

The Roosters dominated in every aspect of play throughout the first half, with the home side’s 10-0 half time lead flattering the visiting Coast team. Titans coach John Cartwright half time blast had the desired effect, with the Titans storming home in the second half to almost secure an unlikely victory.

After a scrappy opening quarter to the match, a seventy metre runaway try to Roosters centre Sam Perrett allowed the home tem to post first points. An uncontested Scott Prince bomb was claimed by Perrett in space, with the nippy Roosters centre showing the Titans cover defence a clean pair of heels to race away under the posts. Sydney skipper Craig Fitzgibbon had no problems with the simple conversion to hand the home team an early 6-0 advantage.

The Roosters went further ahead in the 21st minute, with some great interchanging of passing from the Sydney backline enabling Joel Monaghan to cross out wide. Fitzgibbon’s conversion attempt swung wide, but the home side had the ascendency at 10-0.

With the Titans noticeably off their game, the Roosters took control of the match, and should have led by more than ten points at the main beak, with only poor execution preventing them from posting further points.

The Roosters started the second half in the same mood as the first, with scheming Roosters half Mitchell Pearce ducking through some soft Gold Coast defence, before offloading to a rampaging Fitzgibbon to score beside the posts. Another simple Fitzgibbon conversion pushed the Sydney team out to a commanding 16-0 lead after 44 minutes.

However, the Titans struck back through a dubious try to interchange backrower Gavin Cooper just five minutes later, with television replays suggesting that Prince’s offload to the bullocking Cooper was forward. Rugby Union convert Mat Rogers slotted the easy conversion to finally get the visitors on the board.

Inspired by their first try, the Gold Coast struck again in the 55th minute, with yet another brilliant one handed offload by Prince putting tireless lock Luke Swain over for a rare four pointer. Rogers got his side within four points thanks to his second goal inside five minutes, with the Titans charging back into the contest at 16-12.

A 61st minute penalty goal to Rooster Amos Roberts put the home team back out by a converted try, with New South Wales fullback aspirant Anthony Minichiello scoring a crucial converted try to put the home team out to a handy 24-12 lead.

Making amends for a quiet first half, creative Titans half Scott Prince weaved his way through four Roosters defenders to score a brilliant solo try with ten minutes left on the clock, with Rogers’s third conversion giving the visitors a remote chance of snatching an unlikely victory.

But try as they might, the Gold Coast could not crack the resilient Roosters defence over the final stages, with the Sydney team holding onto record a 24-18 victory.

The Sydney Roosters now face the tough road trip to Olympic Park to take on the Melbourne Storm next Saturday night, whilst the Gold Coast Titans will meet the St George-Illawarra Dragons at WIN Stadium on Friday night.

VENUE and TIME: Aussie Stadium, Wednesday 3pm

HEAD TO HEAD: Played 16, Dragons 9, Roosters 6, 1 Draw

COVERAGE: Fox Sports, 2GB, ABC Radio

LAST 5 CLASHES:
Dragons 36-16, SCG 2006
Dragons 22-12, Aussie Stadium, 2006
Dragons 44-6, WIN Stadium, 2005
Dragons 26-24, Aussie Stadium, 2005
Roosters 18-14, Aussie Stadium, 2004

MEDICAL ROOM:

The Dragons have lost their forward enforcer Jason Ryles for today’s crucial encounter, with the towering prop succumbing to a shoulder injury sustained in the Round five loss to the Melbourne Storm. The injury curse has struck the joint venture club again this season, with Ryles joining Mark Gasnier (pectoral), Simon Woolford (ankle), Dean Young (knee) and Tom Hewitt (hamstring) in extended stints on the sidelines.

Things are looking up for Roosters supporters however, with the majority of their top squad injury free and available for selection. Only Chris Flannery (ankle) and Joel Monaghan (hamstring) are unavailable for selection.

FORM:

Having yet to win a game all season, the Roosters enter this ANZAC Day clash desperate to kick start their 2007 campaign against an equally struggling Dragons outfit. The Bondi based club have statistically the worst attack in the competition, but the signs were there in their last up loss to the Raiders, that combinations are starting to click. Halves Braith Anasta and Mitchell Pearce combined well with hooker Craig Wing in their last start effort, suggesting that the proud clubs 1000th first grade victory is not far away.

The annual injury curse has once again stalled a promising season for the Dragons, with coach Nathan Brown forced yet again to blood players form the lower grades. The loss of Ryles is a massive blow for today’s match, as his size and skill would have been handy against the slower, smaller Roosters pack. The joint venture team have only achieved one win all season, but are in better form than that record suggests.

KEY MATCH-UPS:

Braith Anasta vs Richie Williams

The clash of the aging warhorse versus the young buck will hold the key to both sides chances this afternoon, with both five-eights kicking games crucial to success. Anasta showed glimpses of the form that we all know he is capable of last start, and he must continue to steer his team-mates around the field, allowing rookie half Mitchell Pearce to ease his way into the top grade.

The precocious Williams continues to dazzle and disappoint in his limited time in first grade, with the talented five-eight combining moments of brilliance with the occasional shocking memory lapse. The rookie number six possess a massive long kicking game, and look for him to attempt to nail a few 40/20 kicks this afternoon.

Anthony Tupou vs Ben Creagh

The battle of the two gifted locks shall be one of the more intriguing battles of the match, with Tupou and Creagh in a head to head battle for a NSW bench spot later this season. Tupou looks to have the inside running with his Test selection for the Kangaroos last Friday, but Creagh has been the dragons best forward all season.

VERDICT:

The Dragons have had the wood on the Roosters in the last few ANZAC Day clashes, with the St George-Illawarra team usually possessing a load more strike power that their inner city rivals. Neither team has been in great form thus far this season, with both teams inability to score points costing them dearly.

With both teams enjoying last week off courtesy of the bye, today’s match is a real toss of the coin job. The Dragons have a few injury concerns at present, so the so far winless Roosters have been as installed as slight favourites.

Look to the Roosters to chalk up a grinding, low scoring victory at Aussie Stadium this afternoon, on the back of the improving Anasta / Pearce / Wing combination.

Sydney Roosters VS Brisbane Broncos @ Aussie Stadium, 7.30pm, 6/4/2007

In an annual Good Friday clash that used to be one of the highlights of the NRL season, tonights match pits two struggling teams who have yet to acheive victory in season 2007 thus far.

Brisbane should have opened thier account last Friday night against Penrith, but soemhow allowed the Panthers to score two tries in the final three minutes to send the match into extra time. The defending premiers looked shattered on the sideline after witnessing rookie Panther Peter Wallace boot a massive 45 metre field goal to claim victory in extra time, and the tongu lashing that they would have received from coach Wayne Bennett should see them well and truly fired up for this encounter.

Rooster coach Chris Anderson also gave his chrges a spray after their third successive loss, with the new Sydney coach claiming that some in his side had given up on winning in the final qaurter against Manly last Sunday.

The desperation of the two teams to acheive their first victory of the season should provide a classic encounter between these two former super clubs, with the Brisbane based team carrying too much class in the backline for their inner Sydney rivals.

Look to the Broncos to chalk up their first victory of the season tonight, and it would come as no surprise to see Justin Hodges have a massive game against his former Bondi teammates.

Sydney Roosters VS Manly Sea-Eagles @ Aussie Stadium, 1/04/2007

All the pressure is on the Sydney Roosters in today’s match against the high flying Many Sea-Eagles, as the proud foundation club chase their 1000th first grade victory.

New Roosters coach Chris Anderson was filthy with his sides defensive frailties in last weeks thrashing at the hands of the Cowboys, and you can bet your bottom dollar that their will be a steely resolve in the roosters defence this week.

Manly on the other hand have no such worries, looking impressive in their opening two victories over Canberra and the Tigers, considering the way were without Orford, Menzies and Matai.

Considering both teams form, you would tip the Sea-Eagles to compound on the Roosters woes with a runaway victory, but something tells me that the Roosters will be primed to cause an upset. Look for a close Manly victory in a low scoring encounter, with Manly fullback Brett Stewart a certainty to score after a lean last three matches.

Sydney Roosters Round 3 Analysis

March 29th 2007 12:44

In what could be a step in the right direction for the struggling Sydney Roosters team, coach Chris Andersen this week decided to bench their controversial one marker defensive ploy which has been thus far unsucessful.

Andersen has also dropped a few 'name' players for this wekks clash, with Test centre Iosia Soliola, rookie half Josh Lewis and big prop Charlie tonga all turning out in Premier League this weekend. The creative Amos Roberts returns to bolster the Roosters impotent backline, with another rookie half in Mitchell Pearce to feed the scrum.

There is no doubting the fact that once Harrison, Tupou and Flannery are back on the park for the Bondi based team, that they will be a more powerful line-up. Much of the Roosters hopes will once agian depend on the form of Braith Anasta - if he can fire than the Roosters may just have enough talent and experience to cause a massive upset against a stra studded Manly side this Sunday.

Injuries-
Chris Flannery - broken fibula - Round 14
Ashley Harrison - Knee - Round 8
John Williams – knee – Round 6
Anthony Tupou - hamstring - Round 4

Can the new look Dragons breathe fire?

January 18th 2007 00:12
St George-Illawarra Dragons Off Season News Snippets:-

* The Dragons are yet another club that has had a massive change in personnel over the off season, with 14 players missing from their 2006 playing roster. However, like Parramatta, the Dragons have signed only a minimal number of players to replace this exodus. In coming players like Simon Woolford (Canberra), Beau Scott (Cronulla), Luke McDougall (Cronulla) and Adam Peek (Parramatta) have big shoes to fill, considering thet they will be replacing departing Aaron Gorrell (Les Catalans), Trent Barrett (Wigan), Colin Best (Canberra)and Luke Bailey (Titans).

* The Dragons 2007 campaign will be directly hinged on the success and fitness of new half pairing, Mark Gasnier and Matthew Head. Compounding the question mark over the untested pairing, is the news this week that Head has yet again succumbed to another troublesome knee injury, and is expected to miss the first five rounds of the 2007 NRL premiership.
In what is another setback for the injury plagued half star, Coach Nathan Brown has confirmd that Ben Hornby will once again start the season at halfback in place of Head.

* The future of troubled winger Wes Naqaima is set to be decided by the Courts in February, after Naiqama was yet again caught driving while unlicensed late last year. The Dragons are awaiting the judicial decision of Naiqama's case before deciding on his future.

St George-Illawarra Dragons Confirmed 2007 Trial Matches:-

24 February - v Canterbury Bulldogs @ WIN Stadium
3 March v - South Sydney Rabbitohs @ Telstra Stadium (Charity Shield)

Sydney Roosters Off Season News Snippets:-

*A revamped Roosters club will look to herald in a new era to celebrate their 100th year of existance, with a new coaching staff and player fresh personnel set to challenge for the 2007 title.
Former Australian Coach Chris Anderson taked over Head Coach responsibilities with the departure of Ricky Stuart (Cronulla) and John Cartwright (Titans), and the Roosters welcome the services of Nate Myles (Bulldogs), Danny Nutley (Castleford), Chris Beattie (Les Catalans) and John Williams (Parramatta).

* The Rooster have released a new playing strip and logo for their 100 year celebrations, with the jersey now predominantly red, with blue and white stripes.

* The Roosters have been engaged in a touch of controversey with the NRL regarding their 100 year celebrations, with the NRL set to celebrate their 100th anniversary in season 2008 - exactly 100 years from the codes inception.

Sydney Rooster Confirmed 2007 Trial Matches:-

17 February - Roosters VS Wests Tigers @ Aussie Stadium
3 March - Roosters VS Parramatta Eels @ Gosford

Sydney Roosters Off Season Gossip :-

* The Roosters have always been a club that is commonly associated with just about every off contract player on the market, but it seems that the Sydney media must have been desperate for stories throughout this off season. Bulldogs enforcer MarkO'Meley and Wallaby winger Lote Tuquri have both been linked to the club for season 2008.

Can someone please explain how this club, that only a few years ago were seeking salary cap concessions for being based in an affluent and expensive part of Sydney, would be able to fit these tow under the cap legally?

They already have internationals in Craig Wing, Anthony Minichiello, Braith Anasta, Iosia Soliola, Craig Fitzgibbon and Anthony Tupou, as well as representatives Amos Roberts (Country), Chris Flannery (QLD), Danny Nutley (QLD), Nate Myles (QLD), Chris Beattie (QLD), John Doyle (QLD). Sure, some of those players may not have played representative football for a few years, but even rough estimates would suggest that at least two thrids of their salary cap would have been spent on these players?

And they want O'Meley and Tuquri?

Nrl Report Cards for 2006

October 7th 2006 11:50
NRL Report Cards

Now that the season has finished, in this weeks club analysis we will hand out the report cards for each club in season 2006. Just like a school report, each club will be given a grade between A and E, according to their 2006 playing roster, 2006 position as opposed to their 2005 position and how well they overcame setbacks throughout this season. As there is no rugby league until Friday the 14th of October, we will review just 3 clubs each day this week.

As of next Monday, we will be changing the look of the domain around, looking at different aspects of rugby league for the average punter. The new line –up will look like –

Monday – Rule interpretations
Tuesday – Legends of the 1980’s and 1990’s
Wednesday – Rule changes or potential changes to the game
Thursday – NRL highlights
Friday – Preview of Tri-Nations Match
Saturday – Gold Coast Titans News
Sunday – Review of Tri-Nations Match

Sydney Roosters -

2006 Season Rating – D

It was one of the worst years in recent history for the Bondi based club, as the star studded team struggled to put eight wins together for the season. That is an unacceptable performance for a team at full strength that can field a representative forward pack and halves pairing, and a sprinkling of representative talent amongst their backline.

Next year heralds a new era for the Roosters, with a new Coach and a few key players leaving the club.

Attack rating out of 10 – 7
Defence rating out of 10 – 7.5
Best Backline player – Amos Roberts
Best Forward player – Craig Fitzgibbon
Rookie Sensation – David Shillington

St George-Illawarra Dragons -

2006 Season Rating – B

Another year of what could have been for the mighty joint venture, as the star studded Dragons inexplicably threw a promising season away at the final hurdle again. The Dragons got to within one game of the decider for the second consecutive year, and were once again humiliated in their final game, this time by the rampant Broncos.

This year was the end of an era for the Dragons with Barrett, Bailey, Henderson, Best, Greenshields, Timmins, Simmonds and now maybe Gorrell all leaving ahead of season 2007. While the Dragons have signed some quality, next year will be looked at as a year of rebuilding.

Attack rating out of 10 – 8
Defence rating out of 10 – 8
Best Backline player – Ben Hornby
Best Forward player – Dean Young
Rookie Sensation – Brett Morris

Wests Tigers -

2006 Season Rating – C

The Tigers premiership defence was ruined by lengthy injuries to key players, and it did expose the lack of quality depth that the premiers have at their disposal. After having an exceptional year in 2005 with injuries, season 2006 saw the appearance of injuries to Hodgson, Farah, Marshall, Fulton, Gibbs, Halatau and Whatuira for major parts of the year, and thus killed off their semi-final chances.

The rookies that Coach Sheens promoted however will be better for the experience, but it remains to be seen how successful Wests will be next year with a few key players leaving.

Attack rating out of 10 – 6.5
Defence rating out of 10 – 7
Best Backline player – Scott Prince
Best Forward player – Todd Payten
Rookie Sensation – Dean Collis

NRL Club Analysis

Sydney Roosters –

Key Signing / Re-signing – Danny Nutley
In a side that was often accused for lacking passion in season 2007, the Roosters have certainly signed the right player in Danny Nutley to instil some pride back in the Bondi Junction club.

Nutley is one of those rare players in the modern game that has survived throughout his career by basing his game on emotion and toughness, so as to make up for the lack of natural talent that his team-mates possess. Nutley always wears his heart on his sleeve, and this is the type of player that will benefit skipper Fitzgibbon and Coach Anderson, as they try to reverse this seasons dramas.

Key Loss – Ryan Cross
One of the real problem areas for the Roosters in 2006 was the lack of penetration by their outside backs. The loss of Cross only compounds that problem for new Roosters Coach Chris Anderson, as Amos Roberts and Joel Monaghan aren’t the type of centres that set up their wingers for try scoring opportunities.

St George-Illawarra Dragons –

Key Signing / Re-signing – Ben Creagh
Ben Creagh has proved this year, that he is more than ready to take over the lock forward mantle that Shaun Timmins has held for the Dragons over the past few years. Blessed with speed, strength, size and skill, Creagh is basically a combination of Barrett, Timmins and Ryles, all rolled into one.

Along with Gasnier, Head and Young, Creagh is the future that the Dragons hope to build their renaissance on.

Key Loss – Clint Greenshields
Even though the Dragons are losing such names as Barrett, Bailey and Timmins, the loss of Greenshields could prove to be the biggest lock. Greenshields is one of the safest, yet electrifying fullbacks in the competition, with his ability to read play his forte.

While the majority of NRL fullbacks are blessed with speed and safety under the high ball, Greenshields has the power that a lot of other fullbacks don’t have. His size is obviously an asset in defence, and that is what the Dragons will lose when Ben Hornby reverts back to the fullback position next season.
