Rampant Tigers gun down Cowboys

July 30th 2007 11:03
The Wests Tigers have stormed back into premiership calculations registering a 54-10 annihilation of the North Queensland Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval on Monday night.

On a night of celebrations at Leichhardt Oval, it was a dominant second half display from a highly energised Tigers outfit that saw them record a scintillating ten tries to two victory over a disappointing Cowboys outfit.

Wests signalled their intentions of playing an up tempo brand of attacking rugby league, with powerhouse backrower Taniela Tuiaki charging through four Cowboys defenders to open the scoring.

Playing his first game back from a cheekbone fracture, Tigers skipper Brett Hodgson missed from wide out to leave the home side up 4-0 after seven minutes.

North Queensland backrower Justin Smith did his best to imitate Tuiaki’s 7th minute effort, with the talented backrower bursting through three Tigers goalline defenders to level the scores.

The Tigers backline was beginning to cut swathes through the tiring Cowboys defenders, with Hodgson unleashing a beautiful inside ball to a flying John Morris to touch down under the posts.

Hodgson duly converted to push the Tigers out to a 10-4 lead after 25 minutes.

The Tigers were beginning to take control of proceedings, and it was a brilliant Robbie Farah grubber in the 35th minute allowing Hodgson to dot down for the Tigers third try of the night.

Hodgson again converted from right in front to send the Tigers to a 16-4 half time advantage.

The Tigers dominated possession early in the second half and were rewarded with a try to backrower Chris Heighington

With Hodgson hampered by a lower leg injury, Marshall converted from right in front to push the Tigers lead out to 22-4.

It was another breathtaking Tigers backline movement just three minutes later that extended the home side’s lead, with Wests centre Paul Whatuira flicking a magnificent offload to Farah, who raced forty metres before linking with zippy winger Daniel Fitzhenry to score.

Marshall’s second conversion handed the Tigers a dominant 28-4 lead.

The Cowboys bridged the gap in the 54th minute through a simple try to interchange forward Matthew Bartlett, with Thurston’s conversion making it 28-10.

Tries in the 58th, 66th, 70th, 72nd and 76th minutes completed the 54-10 thrashing, with the Cowboys season now in tatters thanks to a shoulder injury to halfback Johnathan Thurston.

Wests now travel to Carrara Stadium next Saturday night to take on the desperate Gold Coast Titans, while the Cowboys will play host to the Canberra Raiders at Dairy Farmers Stadium, also on Saturday night.

A Robbie Farah field goal just thirty seconds before the half time siren proved the difference at CUA Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with the Wests Tigers holding off a determined Penrith Panthers fight back to run out 25-24 winners.

In what was an entertaining, and at times brutal clash, three Tigers tries in a twenty minute before and after halftime enabled Wests to stretch their winning sequence to six matches, whilst leaving the Panthers languishing in the bottom four.

It was evident form the kick off that both teams had turned up with an attacking mindset, and the breathtaking end to end football in the opening half, left the 17,337 CUA Stadium faithful thoroughly entertained.

A freakish try to Panthers backrower Frank Puletua opened the scoring for the home team in the 21st minute, with the Tigers making a monumental error in failing to adequately clean up a cross field kick. An innocuous chip kick in field wickedly bounced past Tigers defenders Brett Hodgson and Chris Heighington, allowing the Kiwi international to ground the loose ball unopposed. Penrith winger Michael Gordon converted from in front to hand the home team the perfect start.

The Tigers struck back just ten minutes later though, through a simple try to makeshift five-eight Liam Fulton. With little other option on the last tackle, Tigers half John Morris hoisted a bomb high, with Fulton winning the aerial challenge to dive over beside the posts. Hodgson had no problems with the simple conversion to level the scores at 6 all after 33 minutes.

A brilliant solo effort by Daniel Fitzhenry extended the lead for the visitors in the 35th minute, with the utility winger leaving four Panthers defenders in his wake in a 50 metre run. Hodgson converted his second from right in front, and after a slow start, the Tigers held a surprise 12-6 lead.

However, the Tigers weren’t finished the scoring for the first half though, with crafty hooker Robbie Farah slotting a field goal just before the halftime siren to enable the visitors to lead 13-6 at the main break.

An early second half try to flashy Panthers winger Michael Gordon got the home team firing, with a magnificent sideline conversion by Jennings saw the Panthers trailing by one.

But it was yet another freakish try to Tigers rookie Chris Lawrence that saw the Tigers go further ahead, with the 17 year old utility claiming a perfect Farah left foot kick to dot down for his fifth try of the season. Hodgson booted his third conversion of the afternoon to push the visitors out to a 19-12 lead with 27 minutes left to play.

The Tigers appeared home and hosed when backrower Ben Galea scored in the 61st minute, with Hodgson’s fourth conversion handing the visitors an unassailable 25-12 lead.
But two converted tries in the final five minutes to Panthers rookie Geoff Daniela and winger Nick Youngquest, ensured their would be a grandstand finish, but the home team killed off any chance of a miracle escape with one of the seasons more bizarre endings to a match.

With Youngquest scoring with only forty seconds left of play, the Panthers declined the shot at goal and ran back downfield in preparation for the kick off. However, referee Jarred Maxwell ordered the Panthers to take the conversion attempt, with Peter Wallace’s successful shot at goal winding the clock right down.

That left the Tigers just under twenty seconds to walk back to halfway to restart, with the Tigers stalling ensuring there would be no miracle win for the Panthers.

Penrith now play host to competition leaders Manly at CUA Stadium next Friday night, whilst the Wests Tigers will travel to Parramatta Stadium next Monday night to tackle the Eels.

A fast finishing Wests Tigers registered a 27-8 shut out of a disjointed St George-Illawarra Dragons at Telstra Stadium on Sunday, with a three try burst in the final 13 minutes consolidating the Tigers top eight position.

The five tries to one victory handed St George-Illawarra their sixth loss of the season, with Dragons coach Nathan Brown struggling to find answers to his side’s inexplicable slow start to the season.

Missing regular play makers Benji Marshall, Dean Collis and Danny Galea through injury, the Tigers were always in control over their more experienced rivals, with Liam Fulton, Bryce Gibbs and Brett Hodgson dangerous all match.

After an exciting start to the match, the Dragons took an early 2-0 lead thanks to a penalty goal to Matthew Head for a Wests Tigers indiscretion.

The Tigers were full of running for most of the first half, with their enterprising attack finding many a hole in the Dragons outside defences.

Wests backrower Ben Galea got the Telstra Stadium crowd cheering in the 24th minute, when he charged through a yawning gap in the Dragons defence to find a flying Liam Fulton to race away and score. In the absence of regular goal kicker Benji Marshall, Tigers fullback Brett Hodgson assumed the goal kicking role, converting Fulton’s try to put Wests ahead 6-2.

St George-Illawarra’s rookie centre Chase Stanley produced a piece of individual brilliance to get the Dragons back into the match just before halftime, with Stanley’s one on one strip on a surprised Fulton allowing to him scoot away for a 55 metre try. Matthew Head’s second goal of the night handed the visitors a shock 8-6 lead at the break.

The Dragons should have had the perfect opening to the second half, with Matthew Head bursting through the line to charge over behind the posts, but television replay’s showed that the injury prone half had actually lost control of the ball whilst attempting the grounding.

Wests made the visitors pay the ultimate price for Head’s monumental error, with Fulton crossing for his second try of the afternoon in the 44th minute. Hodgson’s conversion skewed wide, but a psychological blow to the Dragons had been dealt.

A converted try to Danny Galea in the 67th minute put the Tigers out to a 16-8 lead, with a spectacular 90 metre try to Tigers teenager Chris Lawrence getting the Tigers out to a 20-8 lead.

Creative Tigers half John Morris booted a 76th minute field goal to put the result beyond doubt, with Wests utility Daniel Fitzhenry sealing the match with a try in the final minute.

The Tigers now travel to Mt Smart Stadium next Sunday to face off against a sporadic New Zealand Warriors outfit, whilst the Dragons will host the Gold Coast Titans at WIN Stadium this Friday night.

A lethargic Canterbury Bulldogs outfit were handed a wet weather football lesson by the West Tigers tonight, with the joint venture team recording a comfortable 34-18 victory at a drizzly Telstra Stadium.

The Tigers executed coach Tim Sheens game plan to the letter, with the constant dummy half scoots of the Tigers continuously catching the massive Bulldogs forwards on the back foot. Canterbury was their own worst enemies though, continuously turning over possession in good attacking positions in the slippery conditions
